Here's a hint bump.
It's something that we all use, but this is an old one and the technology that makes it work has changed.
And, they were disposable.

Ok, two items this time.
First - An interesting item that I prefer over it's more modern counterpart. (keep meaning to see if I can find a new one to order so I can leave this poor old thing alone to enjoy it's retirement...)
This is the "Challenge" item, so if you get this one, you win and can post the next photo.
Next - An item that I can't figure out what the heck it is. Clearly this is a pretty specialized tool, but you guys have amazed me with your diverse experience pretty regularly here. If you guess this one right, you get nothing. (except my appreciation, I've had this thing for almost ten years now and still can't figure out what it is... Yes, my dad and I play this game in real life... And no, he doesn't know WTH this is either.)

on item #1, idk.. maybe a knot tying tool...
on the second item, do the jaw like portions turn? dose each side move with each side of the pliers in a scissor like action? |

#1, no sir.
#2, yes, it seems like some sort of cutter, the cutting portion of the head moves in unison, so that both wires or whatever would be cut at the same time, also, the two cutting slots are at a perfect right angle.

Is it an old tool for cracking into crab legs? LOL...crazy question, I know.
If I'm right, someone else can post a new pic....anyone...as I'm headed out for the Birch Aquarium for the better part of the day. |

I'm afraid it is not, nor is it used for cracking crab legs. ;)
Although, I will say that cdpayne's guess is closer.
This is something you absolutely have at least one of. |

is it a can opener or one of those tools to punch holes in a can? |
|
|
05/20/2012 03:15:28 PM · #2745 |
Yep, can opener!
Now, anyone want to guess how it's used?
(Hint, I can open a can faster with this than any other solution I've ever found, but you have to be strong to use it) |

the point hooks under one side of the lip and you adjust the blade to the length of the can and puncture the top? |

The end is inserted under the rim opposite where the cut will be started. The sliding blade is positioned near the other rim, and downward force applied to poke the point through the lid. Then the blade can be moved sideways to lengthen the cut, the flat end repositioned, and the cut lengthened some more, etc.
I think mark won this one. I was thinking of a different use entirely.

that's what i meant but i typed the abridged version. :)
#2 looks familiar but can't get my finger on it. i think my dad had one in his tool shed.
i'm making some breakfast now so will get something up in a few minutes. |

Pretty close.
So, here's why I love it -
center the point on the can lid
poke through with a smart tap on the end
bring parallel to the can lid
adjust blade
rip around edge of can.
--
I know that sounds complex, but I can open a can in well under 5 seconds with this.
