as the title says, when you shoot fill flash in golden hour sunlight, do you gel your flash to a warmer tone or just leave it as is?

A straw or CTO gel...otherwise you get that flash in golden light look.

what kind of CTO gel? they come in different varieties and shades, for instance amazon has 1/2, 1/4 1/8 etc.

it depends on what you want for a finished look.. If you want the sky to be exaggerated, then don't use one, or a very weak one, and then white balance for the flash and you will get deep colors in the sky.. If you want a more balanced look, use a stronger gel..

i generally don't needa gel in sunlight. its more of an issue indoors (fluoro/tung). However, you will notice that experimentation with gelling in different light produces wonderful results. Just keep in mind the temperature of the gel affected area vs. overall scene, as trying to match this is exactly the reason most photographers gel in the first place.

Common Gels that i find useful in differing conditions include the CTB 1/2 and 1/4 (add a shade of blue), THE CTO 1/2 and 1/4 (orange), CTS 1/2 and 1/4 (a less red more Strawlike temp equalizer for tunsgten balance, the CTS 1/2 is my most used gel), window green (i think its ctg but i forget, but this is what i call it). The Rosco site (my gels are Rosco)gives you exact temperature modifications brought on by this stuff. I also use a mix and match of other Gels from a pack of 12 sheets i purchased to create different effects, but thats all me being me i spose.

You should have a variety and experiment because no two scenes will be exactly the same. What works in one case will look like crap in the other.

I would instead use a white (or silver for a stronger effect) reflector. After all, the reason to shoot in the "golden hour" is to take advantage of that beautiful natural light, not blow the snot out of it with a flash. You can do that anytime.
