I'm looking at upgrading to the T2i for various reasons, one of which is video capability. I've never used any devices that take SD cards, so I'm way out of the loop. Apparently there are SD, SDHC, and SDXC cards of various class (4,6,10 among others).
I shoot RAW stills and will shoot short videos (of the kiddo mainly, probably no more than a few minutes at a time). I never fill a 4GB card on an outing now, but I might need to put up to 30 min of video on a card too, now, while I'm out and about. I'm thinking either 2 new 4GB SD cards of some sort or 2 8GB cards will get me going nicely.
Any thoughts out there on the best kind/class/speed/brand/size/price SD card(s) to go for? |

Heck, while I'm asking, any thoughts on a good card reader as well? All I have is USB currently, but I'd be open to firewire suggestions too (ports/cards for the PC and card readers). |

This Sandisk card seems like a good deal...$50 for a 16GB, class 6 SDHC card. One reviewer uses it flawlessly with the T2i...

I'm shooting with the T2i and have been using SD cards for a long time now. I currently use a Lexar 16GB and a Kingston 8GB SDHC cards. Both are Class4. The manual says to use class 6 for HD video but I've had no problem. Keep in mind that I filled the 16 GB last Saturday with about 45 minutes of HD video and I was surprised when I ran out of memory on the card because my shots were not much more than 30 to 120 seconds in length. So it gets eaten up fast and if you can't offload it then your 2 8GB might not save your butt on location. I haven't bought a dedicated high speed reader yet and don't really see the need. I have a pocket SD card USB reader and I just bought a Sata Dock that has a card reader built in.
Here are some reader links.

I just did the math and 44 minutes of video on 16GB is correct
48Mb/s = 6 MB/s = 360MB/min
The stats on that Sandisk card are 160 minutes at 13Mbps. I guess that's for consumer P&S cameras.
BTW you really should transcode the footage for editing (Apple ProRezHD if your on a Mac) but believe it'll take some time. |

SD cards are the original standard and go up to 2Gb in size.
SDHC cards go from 4Gb up to 32Gb in size. They will not work in an older device designed for the original SD cards
SDXC are the newest standard and go from 32 Gb up to 2Tb, devices being backward compatible with SD and SDHC. This last standard only came out in 2009, so there are not a lot of devices using it yet.
The Rebel T2i supports the SDXC standard and is backward compatible with SD and SDHC.
The speed class is equivalent to the maximum MegaBytes per second it can transfer at. (Note: Mb is MegaBits per second, MB is MegaBytes per second. There are 8 bits in a byte, so whether that letter b is upper or lower case makes a difference.
* Class 2: 16 Mbit/s (2 MB/s)
* Class 4: 32 Mbit/s (4 MB/s)
* Class 6: 48 Mbit/s (6 MB/s)
* Class 10: 80 Mbit/s (10 MB/s)

From the Lexar link posted by Hawkeyefilms I have the Professional UDMA Dual-Slot USB Reader. It is excellent and I have found it very fast.
Before I purchased this reader I had a cheap card reader that also had 3 usb slots on it. It worked fine for transferring files from my 40d to the computer, never had a problem with it. When I purchased the 7d and used it to transfer images some files became corrupted. They were perfect on the card (transferred same images using the camera - actually thought I had a bad copy of the 7d as I had just purchased it) so the cardreader was the problem. Thought this might be of interest to you as you have the 550d (T2i) which has the same size images as the 7d.
I also purchased a Sandisk 16mg UDMA card. Haven't used it for video but no problems with images.

I have owned and used a T2i for this past 18 months. I have come to the conclusion that, although the camera only writes at an average of 5mb/s, I would probably have fewer automatic stops with a class 10 SDXC card. I notice now that such Sandisk 64gb sdxc cards are available on ebay as well as amazon and newegg for well under $100 - half the price that you will pay on sites such as Sandisk or authorized resellers. Has anyone actually bought one of those sdxc cards on ebay or for sub $100 prices and tested it with h2testw? |

I used a 8 gb sd card class 4 and after 5-6 seconds it goes into if fearing at full 1080 p rez...
So I got class 10 and film stuff until the card gets full no prob.
If I were you I wouldn't risk it spend the extra 10/20 bucks and get a class 10 |

as i posted in another thread i have three of these. i use them in my 60D which has the same sensor (thus the same size pictures) as your t2i. video isnt a problem either. class 6 or better is recommended by canon for video.
i highly recommend them.
transcend class 10
