Is that wrong? Because I often tell people to come to DPC and check out my portfolio, I tell them my name is paulbtlw.

On my favourite guilty pleasure site, YANAP (youarenotaphotographer.com) there have been instances where a fauxtog has advertised their services but used the work of another, much better photog to do so. Sadly nothing new and will probably only get worse. *sigh*...

i like how when you get a couple of pages deep, the images aren't available any longer... i wonder if the owners found out and removed them.

Have you seen this one? Super Mom Saves Baby. I'm not sure what the faxtog was thinking using the block. There's no reason why the baby couldn't sit on the ground.

Here's the link to the actual video.

I find that site crosses the line into just plain meanness to the point it's not funny.

Yes, I do agree that the comments are often mean in nature. However, if fauxtogs are going to try and pass off truly terrible pics as professional quality work, then they should be called out on it. So mean as the comments may be, the work is often truly deserving of it.

The work might be poor, but far too many of the harshest comments are not about the work, they're directed at the photographer or the subject.

Yes I agree that it's unfair to take a run at the subject, especially if they're on the large side. But yes, I am all for pillorying fauxtogs who think that simply owning a *professional* camera, that is any DSLR, automatically makes them a professional. YANAP simply calls out these people who are passing off their work as professsional - they watermark it, put it up in albums advertising their services, and charge for their services. Check out your local craigslist or kijiji for wedding or portrait photography and you'll soon see what I mean.

I can cook a decent meal, own a set of Henckel knives and am useful to have around in a professional restaurant kitchen. Does that make me a chef? Hell no. And if I tried to pass myself off as one, it wouldn't be long before I was called out on it and had my ass hung out to dry. Most of us own a vehicle and know how to put gas in the tank and do general maintenance on it, right? Does that automatically make us mechanics? No.

Honestly, i know YANAP gets tossed around a lot, but truth be told, if you are holding a camera, line up a shot and press the button for the shutter release, then yes, you are in fact a photographer. You have used a camera to capture a moment in time to image (digital or film), therefore you photographed it and are a photographer.
This does not make you a PROFESSIONAL, or even a Good photographer, but you ARE a photographer. If you want to toss around YANAPP, change it to you are not a professional photographer.
Saying YANAP is like saying to a person who just sat behind the driver seat of a car on a cross country (or cross-town) trip: you are not a driver. Know what reaction you'll get there? "(expletive) off".

For 'faux'tographers like the original post, stealing someone elses images and calling them your own in order to drum up business is wrong on many levels and anybody who does that deserves to be suitably punished (financially through lawsuit, revoking of web-hosting services, etc). That I agree with, but not the YANAP bit.

The YANAP site is a place where 'trolls' go to light the torches and grab the pitchforks, and honestly belongs in the sub-dwellings of the internet with sites like 4-chan.

actually, if someone pays you for your services whether others think you are good or not, that makes you a professional photographer.

obliviously the work shown on that site isn't very good and all of us here know how damn hard it is to actually take good pictures. takes lots of skill and time.

I'm kind of mixed about that site while i find it amusing i also think its kind of pompous for pro photogs to berade those that aren't as good or established. obviously those being made fun of think they are good at it or feel they can charge and what if they are getting paid work? so long as the clients are happy (i find it hard to believe, but i guess it possible) that's really all that matters.

i also find it funny that the site can take copyrighted material, black out the copyright and bash it, does anyone know where material came from. i'd be kind of ticked if someone took my work and bashed it on their personal blog. maybe it falls under some special provision, but they are still using someone else's work to drive traffic to their site. kind of odd for someone who feels so above these people to create that site to feel they can just take someones else's work.

It could. Since this site trying to parody the original work, it probably is legal. The âfair useâ doctrine allows the use of copyrighted material for commentary, criticism, news reporting, research, teaching and other purposes that are presumed to serve the general public interest. Courts have been willing to extend the fair use protection to parodies in certain cases as well, but the scrutiny will be higher in those cases. Parodies walk the very fine line between legal use and infringement.

Well, if there's a silver lining here, at least Amber Hughes is getting a lot of free publicity out of this story.

That's not the point. The comments go way beyond saying "You obviously suck as a photographer. Your so-called work is terrible, how can you charge money for it." and almost universally cross the line into name-calling, and personal insults.
