I was doing rather poorly then very briefly entered the sixes but I've gone crashing back down again and landed with a thud.

First off, don't give up. I doubt anyone here is being "mean" or "cruel" deliberately. They may be criticizing your photo and it may deserve it (or it may not), but they don't know your photo from anyone else's.
Secondly, this is a competition. You should not expect to learn your skills in a competition. You can definitely learn from competing, no doubt and even the folks in Iceland probably learn something from their entries here from time to time. However, it's still a competition. If you have a member account, you have a workshop area and can upload photos there and share them in the forums and get constructive advice, if all you're after is learning and getting better.
Someone does not walk onto a high level football, baseball, soccer, whatever field and expect to do as well as the ones who have been at it a long time. You learn in a proper forum and work your up and put your skills to test in competition.
All that said, enter away. You should. But likewise you should not expect coddling from everyone to "help you learn". A competition just isn't the venue for instruction.
Learning, yes. Instruction, no. Have a thick skin.
Look at photos that win or score well and compare them objectively to your own. Learn why their photo was better than yours. Read up on those technique or ask the photographer directly. There aren't too many here who are out and out jerks and nearly everyone I've dealt with here has been quite helpful even if we don't see eye to eye on everything.
Like others have said, you can get help before submitting. As you build relationships here, you'll have a stable of go to people who will tell it to you straight... to help you, not discourage you. |

I am not unhappy with the score, but the comment column is leaving me feel a little EMPTY inside... |

I'm not looking to be coddled, and trust me, I appreciate criticism more than most - but saying to someone just starting out "You've got no eye for it, find another hobby" That's f&cKing mean.
Thank you to everyone else for the feedback and reality check. And to the other guy - you know who you are - you will one day take that comment back. I promise you that. But you'll still be a D%ckhead! |

That's the type of comment that you should report to the SC. That's definitely not in the spirit of this site. If you look at the comment, there is a "report post" button on the right.
I highly recommend you use it, and just tell the SC that you're new here, and that the person is giving DPC a bad reputation. |

Well, like I said... not everyone here is like that, but yes that is totally mean and out of line.

Nikki, that kind of comment seems to me is against the rules of the site so definitely report it NOW! Here are the voting rules - I bolded the word I think violates the rules
You may not:
give an entry a lower score because you believe it violates the Challenge Rules.
recommend an entry for disqualification for not meeting the challenge.
vote on an entry based on its server-generated thumbnail.
vote on your own entry.
vote in a manner that suggests an intent to disrupt the voting system.
offer or cast biased votes for any other user.
offer slanderous, rude, profane or inflammatory comments.
abuse the anonymous commenting feature in any way.
discuss any entry in the forums while voting is in progress.
hold more than one DPChallenge account.
vote from another userĂ¢€™s DPChallenge account.
attempt to alter the point totals for any entry in any way.

Yes, I reported it.
Yes, he took it back.
Yes, he's still a ..... member.
Thanks everybody for letting me rant and setting me straight about this being abnormal. I'm looking forward to the challenges (and I mean that emotionally as well as literally) ahead! |

I've seen worse comments and given nastier ones.... Albeit to only one member who does the same to mine and it's only in jest as we compare notes before a challenge haha, maybe it was said in jest thinking it was a friend of theirs?
We'll have to wait and see... |

But would you make that kind of a remark unless you absolutely knew that it was directed at your "friend"? Wouldn't you be embarrassed and apologetic if you made that remark to a stranger? Why take the chance of appearing rude/mean and hurting the feelings of a stranger? Giving honest critique is a lot different than being rude/mean. Why do people feel the need to be so snarky? We are supposed to be adults - that comment to Nikki sounds like the comment of an immature kid. I hope whoever made that comment would privately apologize to Nikki and change the comment to a kinder, honest critique. |

If Kevin's is definitely a 6, then I am quite sure mine is a 7+. I am hopefully headed for a tiny violin, though. Happy with that! |
