Okay, let me turn it around. Do some people not vote because they feel they cannot cast fair and objective votes? |

When I first joined I didn't vote in challenges I entered because my voting average is much lower than everyone else's. This inadvertently raises my score, on average, by the difference of the average voter compared to my average. Once I realized a voter on the other side does the converse, it all works itself in the wash as far as placements are concerned. Since then, I've voted in every challenge on every entry.
When I get home I'll make some graphs, but the number of voters hasn't changed significantly over the years.
Will have to start another thread, but I think it's more problematic when people don't vote on every image.

This does seem like it might be a good idea to boost voting by non-participants. Seeing the challenge topic might peak their interest to go check out the entries and, hopefully, vote on them and comment on a few. |

I do not know why people choose to not vote, I would not make accusations about their integrity because of that though. You seem to be blatantly and repeatedly missing the point I am making, and continually removing the pertinent quote from your replies only leaves me feeling that you are doing it consciously.
I do imagine that some people do not vote because of the feeling that if their votes disagree with whatever 'norms' the people making the accusations are working to then they might be accused of cheating. Remember, you have already accused them of not being able to cast fair and objective votes before they even start.
I repeat your apparent blanket accusation below again.

Additionally, I would expect that many others do not vote because they cannot be bothered, people like to get votes (mostly ;) ) but often do not have time, energy, motivation, etc to give back.
None of the above reasons imply large scale lack of integrity, I cannot understand why it is necessary or reasonable to jump to that conclusion.

Hey! I never made an accusation. You are taking a portion of my statement out of context. I simply stated I did not understand their stated reason for not voting. There are many who are not voting. I'm just wondering why.
I will say that I sometimes feel I've been made the fool when I give a great vote and comment to the image of someone who has chosen to not contribute any votes to the community effort. I always vote on 100% of the images in a challenge. Allowing people to cherry pick and vote on 20% of the challenge to get their votes to count is as big a problem as those who don't vote at all.
eta: I'm talking about the people who do not vote, or selectively vote. Some of those people have stated that they do not vote because they can't cast an unbiased vote. I'm simply asking a question about their stated reason. It is impossible to imply "lack of integrity" to a person who is abdicating the voting part of their membership.

There is your comment in its full context, how is that not an accusation? As I have said previously, if it wasn't intended as such you really need to rethink how you say things, because it doesn't help to throw statements like the above around so flippantly.
Taken in it's full context I could be picking up on the fact that you also appear to be slating people for commenting too, but I won't :-P
ETA: I have not seen anyone in this thread say that they cannot vote fairly, my original point still stands.

james_so, you may have the last word. I will stop voting, also. Seems like that is the best success policy. However, I may leave comments with the addendum that I am "only commenting". Sheesh!!!!
eta: Some people have privately told me they are not voting because they cannot cast unbiased votes when they have an image entered in a challenge. I certainly will not call them out in the forums.
eta2: Votes Cast: 93,065 I guess that was a big mistake, as I gave high votes to the best images in each challenge. We'll end my vote enthusiasm now.

I can't imagine why I don't read the forums more often !
From below text: "some people have privately told me they are not voting because they cannot cast unbiased votes".... Why is this even cause for concern? It should make you feel good if these "phantoms" choose not to vote. If what you say is accurate, these non-voters are TELLING you they would give out "low" scores in a challenge they are entered in. If that is the case, then you should thank them for NOT voting and giving your photo an even lower score than it might deserve.
DPC is a GAME...it is fun. IMO, you are taking this too serious. Vote...don't vote...enter...don't enter.... there can only be 3 "winners" in each challenge. As hard for it is to believe, the site keeps score and no....we all can't be winners.

half the fun for me here is voting and then observing where my votes placed when the challenge closes. I feel sorry for those who feel they cannot participate in voting.
I give the highest votes to those I enjoy. What's to be biased about.

While I don't think I've ever left a comment that said "only commenting...not voting", I do wonder why I see it at times. What would be the reason for stating that you are "not voting" but "only commenting" on a particular photo?

I have no desire to have any last word Richard, all I want is for you to stop tarring everyone with the same brush and throwing baseless accusations about. If you do not wish to vote then don't, that is your choice and has nothing whatsoever to do with this discussion.

The reason one would do that is because someone may vote low, at some point before you comment, and before the user notices. Then your comment comes in and it looks like you voted low (when in fact you didn't vote).
This applies when you are also going through separately and voting later. I've had people think I've voted them low, when in fact, I voted earlier or later.

Of course I'm going to vote and I always vote fairly and objectively. I take voting very seriously... giving the best votes to the best images. I vote 100% in each challenge. I have no problem giving high scores to great images. It is beyond me why you feel I am tarring anyone. Those who don't vote obviously have their reasons. Those who comment and need to tell us they aren't voting have their reasons. So, I haven't made any "baseless accusations". Everyone needs to live with their own conscience. |

In eight years of participating here, you're the only person I have ever seen express irritation over a non-voting comment, and I cannot comprehend what is so bad about it that you felt the need to complain. I've received quite a few of those, and they're invariably from someone who either wasn't voting at all but felt moved enough to leave a comment while browsing the entries (a great compliment) or chose not to vote because they recognized the photographer (one of your pet peeves). Either way, the benefit of someone's personal opinion of your work has greater value than a single vote. |

Let me be clear. I mark almost all comments as "helpful". My irritation does not arise from the constructive criticism comment in any way. I appreciate the comments. It's the addendum "only commenting" which irritate me. The addendum is unnecessary. I read it as "not voting". When I have just spent the time and energy to vote on 100% of a challenge in a fair and objective way, it's frustrating to hear that other fair and objective voters have decided to not participate. Who should vote in challenges is not always who does vote. |

Several people also state that they don't vote on challenges they are competing in... I for one love all the comments I can get -- whether they vote or not. And unless they indicate their vote IN the comment, I never assume that the comment goes with the last vote received. |
