Not sure if this is the right place for this really but anyway I reckon it would be great if we had one expert editing challenge every month run in the same way as the free study as in its announced with a theme at the start of each month and takes submissions until the end of that month. This could create some exceptional results given that people would have plenty of time to shoot and then edit the final image.
I know Gyaban will gain even more ribbons but he might just get some extra competition with the additional time allowance ;-)
Thoughts?

I love the idea! It would be really great, as it would give much motivation to create the best entry you can. Moreover, with more time, you can organize shooting sessions to various locations, not being too dependent on weather, try and learn new processing tricks, share advices and tips.
As for my ribbons, while it's true that I have been a bit lucky lately, there are plenty of extremely talented artists here, and I've been beaten numerous times in expert editing, so it's not a problem I believe. |

I love that idea, too. Even though it may be down to only two ribbons (after Christophe got his) and I, personally, have no chance in hell of ever getting one, I would love to see regular challenges that will allow people to do the best they are capable of.
Bring it on (or simply ignore it if you don't like the concept)! |

I would love the chance to have longer on expert, my ps skills suck but be a great way to learn and advance skills,
I hope this happens but change seems to happen at glacial speed here |

Okay, as long as more expert edit challenges don't squeeze out (reduce) the photography oriented challenges. |

Being that this would be an extra challenge it won't affect your normal challenges at all and as its extra you won't feel the need to enter as it wouldnt be taking up a weekly slot as they do currently.
A week might be long enough for those that do not want to really apply the rule set but those that do might well be able to put the extra time to great use.

The expert challenges have their place, but that place isn't the free study. |

Hmm would help a little if you read the post. It's proposed as an additional challenge running alongside the freestudy NOT one to take the place of the free study.

I don't understand your view it's proposed as an EXTRA challenge if you don't like the type of challenge rules then don't enter just the same as if you don't like a challenge topic.

I was responding to Art's post. The way I read Arts post was that he was proposing to make several of the monthly Free Studies expert editing. |

Again, I was responding to Hahn's post that he didn't mind as long as it doesn't squeeze out of reduce photography oriented challenges. I agree with him. |

Ok Larrylights I see your point no I wouldn't want it to take over the current challenges as there are not many people yet entering and using te rule set fully so I was hoping having the extra time to take advantage of the additional tools available would help to encourage people to participate without it affecting the current weekly / monthly challenges.

I think this is a fabulous idea.
Having a month would definitely help to get the material (required images) and allow the time for editing for those wishing to participate.
Great idea!!!

i never understood this statement, expert editing is still photography.

As long as we have the same in the other extreme (minimal) or even basic, I'm all for it, some of us don't use photoshop so that would be only fare, although i do think that advanced works perfectly for a photography oriented site. |

Similarly i never agreed with "just because you have a camera doesn't make you a photographer". Yes, actually, it does if you use it to take a picture. It doesn't mean you're especially good, nor does it mean you're a professional, but a photographer you are nonetheless.
Websters defines it as the person who practices the taking of photographs; with an addendum that it applies 'especially to someone who does this professionaly', but not limited to that.
So yes, back on point, this is a photography website and yes these software suites were created to enhance/alter photographs and for no other reason, therefore they are still a tool in a photographers kit the same as a lens/flash/light etc. |

I would enjoy the month long expert challenges if anything to improve my photoshop skills without the annoying late night rushes I usually have to do. As was said in another thread this site is a great place to get critical feedback instead of Facebook feedback etc. |

we've been through this, but basic and minimal editing favors those with better equipment more than advanced favors those with Photoshop skills.
i agree that advanced rules is the best one, but sometimes you just cant capture your "image" in one shot.

Honestly, I've never needed expert to capture what I want, not once.
I do think it's a good idea having expert challenges from time to time but I also think its nice to get back to the essentials of just taking a photo and capturing the moment, both help us improve equally. People interpret photography differently, for me it's about capturing a bit of reality as it hapened through our eyes, for others its about distorting reality through their imagination, no one is right or wrong and we can dabble in both, but there should be equal opportunities for every taste.
Advanced FS seems to be middle ground. |

Mike, if a person understands their equipment, the ruleset won't keep them from making a great image. |
