votes always drops but not gains? Whatever starts high, always, but always go down at the end of the week. Is it psychological, myth? I have no idea? maybe voting time should be 2 days instead of a week.
...anyone? |

Yes. I have had a number of entries go the exact opposite way. Starting in the mid 4s and ending in the high 5s. |

ok then, I say %99 is going down while %1 is going upwards? I know one thing, downwards is a lot more than upwards... |

I think that's still a psychological myth :)
I see it more close to 60% down, 40% up. |

It's psychological. You don't think of "up" as going up. You think of it as just coming back to where it should be. |

Also, most people who complain in the scores threads are in the 6+ range when they do. Getting hit with a 1 or 2 moves them more than a 9 or 10 would. The key is to get that average near 5.5 so both high and low votes move the score by the same relative amount. Less complaining will ensue.

Borrowing the quote from the BYOA challenge thread. Sure this quote is from ace flyman but it could have been any number of members, his just happened to be the first I came across. This is the language many of you use when describing low votes, that you're recovering from a moving average. It would be one thing if you knew where you were going to end up, but you don't. Sure, you might have an idea where you think it should finish, but since the score is a tally of subjective voters, you're simply guessing. So there's no recovery to speak of, just introspection bias rearing its head.

No, my score still hasn't recovered from the 37 votes it got after the 8. |

I think it appears to go down because if you are at 6, another six is unnoticeable, but you can still receive 1,2,3,4, or a 5, and the 6 which does nothing. a 7,8,9 or 10, are less likely, and therefore your score is pulled downward more than it is upwardly mobile. If you are at 6.5 or even 7, this is much more likely, the score being pulled down rather than up, that is.
I am sorry if this is repetitive. I was too busy worrying about my scores dropping to read the whole thread.

I don't submit all that often, but when I do, I turn the scores off and thereby eliminate any temptation to bitch... works wonders for me... you really ought to try it. :O)

This is what I understood and it works for about 80% of the challenges (at least for me):
If the image is good, it starts VERY well and it drops after the first day. After 3 or 4 days it begins to rise again but doesn't reach the score of the first day. The last hours are unpredictable due to tactical voters.
If the image sucks for the voters, it will start VERY bad and then it will slowly rise. After 30-40 votes it stabilizes and before the end it will drop a little.
One big exception was my Still Life entry: after 25-30 votes was under 6 and then experienced a constant rise and at the end of the road it got a ribbon.
My two cents. |
