Maybe they could differentiate between portrait and landscape.
Landscape image: 1240 pixels wide
Portrait Image: 800 pixels high
Square image: 800 pixels x 800 pixels

There are many more threads, but I'm not particularly good at searching them out. Is this enough to get you started.
As far as 1x is concerned, that's up to them. I can only talk about my experiences on DPC. |

Ouch! 4 long years! So at this rate 2015 will be the earliest we'll see any new changes now. |

Oh yeah! I've amassed a substantial pixel credit. I'm willing to sell to the USA, but China is very interested, and willing to pay a good price. I have no patience for Bandwidth Huggers.

Even if the size is increased to 1000 it doesn't mean you need to make your pic that big. It only sets the maximum allowed. You can keep submitting as you do now at 800... Don't see the problem...
As per piracy, the way I see it, it is something you have to deal with... It's inevitable... If you don't want it to happen, don't post your images on the Internet... :-p |

I reckon a 1000 pixels wide for landscape is great |

That depends on whether you care about the votes you receive or not. I can nearly guarantee that if the allowable is 1000 and you enter one at 800 you WILL get dinged, along with numerous comments stating the obvious. So, for those that have a concern about increasing the challenge entry size, stick to your guns and defend your point. |

What about the people with Octcentangulosis? It's a disease which allows only 800 pixels at a time to be seen.
I think the hockey player, Sidney Crosby, has it. That's why he's so easy to check, and is always getting concussions. He's got no wide angle vision.

I really can't imagine a comment like "Beautiful image. The colors and composition are perfect. The subject fits the challenge. Good execution... Ooops! But can't give you an 8 because it is 200 pixels less than the maximum... So, here, a 5... Sorry..."
And if someone is basing his/her vote on 200 pixels less... Well... There's no cure for trolls or human stupidity...

You've been here since 2010 and you still don't know the voters? ;) |

What about all the people who have 800 pixel wide monitors?

I can't imagine a comment like that either; someone that takes enough time to look at an image and write up a substantial comment like that isn't the person that will leave a snarky comment. But if you think an image at 800 versus 1000 will get judged the same, you're wrong.
The point is, a person that doesn't feel comfortable putting an image out there at 1000 and does as you suggest (entering it at the prior maximum), will not have their entry judged the same as the larger ones and the score will reflect it.
So again, I'll repeat, if you would prefer not to see image limits change from the current 800 don't settle for assurances that 800 will still be "okay" in a 1000 limit environment. |

I guess I'm too optimistic and just don't learn... :)
Then it looks like DPC is destined, condemned to never change or evolve for the rest of times... amen...

I'm not saying you're wrong, just don't agree with your opinion... If you're so sure I'm wrong, good for you... :)
As I said before, DPC is condemned to never evolve, partly because of that kind of thinking...

Go ahead and test the theory...enter a photo at 640 pixels (the prior max) and see how it does in an 800 environment. :-) |

I almost always resize my entries to 704 pixels* rather than 800 -- I don't think that has a significant (downward)effect on my scores, which have mostly been slightly above my lifetime average ...
*704 is an exactly 25% reduction from my camera's native size of 2816 pixels. |

I can't believe all the whining about head shots and dirty checks. IF things are worse these days, it's because the kids grew up playing too much non-contact hockey, and got into the bad habit of putting blinders on.
You'd think they'd learn to keep their radar on after one concussion, but apparently not all do. That's just plain cocky hockey.

I pretty much stopped voting when it increased to 800px because that requires me to scroll vertically on my laptop. I also pretty much stopped submitting photos portrait oriented photos to dpchallenge because it's just annoying to have to scroll.
Of course since I was pretty much lost at that change, pushing it even higher doesn't make that much of a difference personally, but really I think 800px is borderline too big and don't really see why you'd need more pixels than that for easy viewing on a screen. With very well processed images at the higher resolution it becomes pretty easy to print them out nicely enough so I'd get worried about images being stolen. |

So everyone else who isn't staying up nights worrying about 'Net piracy gets penalized?
I just don't get it. If you're that concerned with proceeds from images, then what are you doing wasting your time here rather than developing your commercial portfolio?
Nobody's grabbing hi-res, large printable image files from the challenges here......I don't print off anything less than a 5 or 6MB file, and most of what I print, I go bigger yet than that. I'm by no means a pro, I don't do much in high end fine art, or weddings. The whole piracy argument for challenge entries is just ridiculous.

Sorry, but this *IS* the bottom line on the piracy thing.....

You're kidding, right? You edit and view on a laptop??????
You cannot get anything decent in print with the size of DPC files. It's simply not possible.

Langdon should do a simple yes/no vote on a new 1000px maximum width. |
