One positive comment and one explaining my image is DNMC. |
Update:
One positive comment and one DNMC comment rescinded.
To klkitchens: There was no need to rescind your comment and alter your original score as far as I am concerned. In your mind it did not meet the challenge and you scored it accordingly. I have no problem with that. |

I think every time someone is getting DNMC an angel losing its wings and becomes a proctologist. |

It's also possible that people are voting on the difficulty of the capture. There are definitely some panning captures that are much more difficult to achieve than others. That also could be one of the differences in scores.

Now that I'm fully awake, I'm really wondering about the DNMC comments and the score. The comments are total nonsense. My motion panning effort was successful. People don't understand what they are looking at. I give up. |

I've just gone through all the images in this challenge. Honestly, there are one or two that you've gotta wonder about, but overall I think this spate of DNMC is ridiculous. There are other ways to look at motion panning, no motion panning is perfect (even if we would like it to be perfect) - you have to view the whole image for it's WOW factor, not pit pick if the feet aren't in perfect focus. |

+1
I saw a very few images at risk of DNMC (in my judgement) but I think technical difficulty as a primary evaluation element in this kind of challenge. |

but we NEED proctologists. and I'm with markwiley: no need for kikitchens to rescind his dnmc comment, at least not without a very long publishable essay about the meaning of dnmc on dpc. the essay on the meaning of dpc is yet to be assigned. |

i honestly think this site needs a swift kick in the pants for scoring....i 100% disagree with the way it's scored here. Yes some people are professionals, and yes some people are just here because it's a hobby, but the baffling part is that a lot of photos look like they were taken by a blind adhd child with shaky hand syndrome and people rave about the image and give it ridiculously high marks. I've decided that i'm going to try to imitate this technique to find out if it's the technique or the fact that people recognize a style and up-vote because of the person, but i'm honestly very disillusioned by this site lately. I feel that i've learned a few things here, which is why i joined, but the overall low scoring for everybody (honestly, happy with a 5.5? you wouldn't be happy if that was a test....) seriously needs to be overhauled in my opinion. |

Democracy sucks, eh? ;)
The scores are not absolute. If a 5.5 bothers you, instead look at the percentile and see how you fared relative to the rest.

I don't see anything on the front page at the moment that falls into the category you suggest (...shaky hand syndrome...) - so what happened to the "ridiculously high marks"? Maybe those that don't care for that "style" voted them according to what they like. It's a give and take with a wide audience (global community here at DPC).
Vote as you like and do so consistently to be fair - however, no matter how it works out it's rare that a "shapshot" type photo will rise to the top here at DPC. Keep at it and your scores will come up. Best of luck to you in the future. |

taking this to a pm so as not to derail the thread while discussing "snapshot" photos.
And i'm not saying that they all have to end up in the top 3, but the general curve of voting for shots like the shaky-hand photos i mentioned seems way off base to me.

One good comment. Two comments which are totally ridiculous. I've left notes in the image details responding to the ridiculous comments. I've marked all comments as "helpful", however, the check simply means I've read the comments. I guess what I'm saying to myself is... consider the source. So, if one goes to the effort of meeting the challenge... generating a respectable image.... and the voters don't get it.... that is my fault. I should have mucked it up. Would have scored better.
eta: the people who wrote the DNMC comments did NOT rescind them. They do not understand what motion panning should be. But, as I said earlier, it is my fault for not making my panning image a blurry mess to attract the popular amateur vote.

pretty much all dnmc comments (or rescinded, haha)
it IS panning, but not as extreme as some. i had another photo that had GREAT motion blur but i didnt think the composition was as strong so i thought i should enter this instead... now im regretting it - serves me right for trying to pick how the crowd will vote haha. |

Kevin, I appreciated your original comment, as well as the first changed version. I didn't see any reason to complain about it and rather would have it under my shot then the "comment rescinded."
For me DPC is a bit like a test bed - how do others perceive my shots? Sometimes I'm really surprised and I find it very interesting when I find out that someones viewpoint is completely different from mine.
If I intended to communicate something with a shot and from the comment it is obvious I didn't get the idea across, the first question then is what I could do to improve to communicate better (not, how do I get the commenter to write a comment I like).
So don't withhold or censor your comments - as far as I'm concerned: Keep them coming! |
