I have what might seem like a dumb question. I'm using PS7. Once I've created a new layer, how can I select the background layer again?

Look for the layers palette (usually located on the right side, unless you moved it.). It has a list of the layers with thumbnails, and has tabs at the top that say layers, channels, and paths. Make sure that you are on the layers tab, and just click on the background layer in the list, and it should highlight in the list, showing that it is selected. If you do not see the palette, then it is probably turned off. You can turn it back on by selecting the Windows menu, and making sure that there is a check next to layers, or press F7. (I am running version 8, but I think all of this is still the same.) Hope that helps!
