Hi everyone.

I work at the US Environmental Protection Agency. We're doing a lot of stuff around Earth Day (April 22), but the one I want to share here is we're trying to put together a group of photos taken on Earth Day where you are. This is a global project, not just in the U.S.

Please join our Environment in a Day project!

And from that link, I'd also really appreciate your using the share buttons at the bottom of the post to promote it to your social networks.

Thanks!

If you think you even might do this, please let post here.

It requires being in Flickr and I am anti-Flickr :-(

Same here, besides it seems to be limited to the USA.

If you didn't live so far we could go out by the sea shore, take photos of Orca or some other critters, light a campfire and sing kumbaya :O)

About interfaces, DPC could learn a lot from FlickR. I'm there but the name is really stupid (in Dutch).

But, getting back to the subject of this thread, I like the "Get outside. Have some fun" part.
My guess is it can be combined with some challenge here :)

Ray, I said in my original post "This is a global project, not just in the U.S. " and in the blog post I linked to, we said "This is open for global participation ..."

We definitely want photos from all over the world!

I'm not sure how we could've been clearer, but I'm open to suggestions.

So, any chance of opening up another route of submission?

We know some folks would rather not use . Unfortunately, we have several constraints:
1) We tried allowing people to email us photos, but it was a disaster. Random sizes (despite clear guidelines), enormous files, lots of staff time to upload, and then we had them in our account, which meant we had to add info giving credit. Also, Flickr has several very nice features.

2) We're only allowed to use sites that have agreed to modified terms of service. Normal terms include clauses the US federal gov't can't agree to, like indemnifying the site and having disputes handled according to state law. Everyone on DPC, for example, has agreed to do anything necessary in Virginia Beach, VA. But as a federal agency, we're not subject to state law or court.

3) We have no almost no budget for this, so we need to use free sites.

Also, keeping all the photos in one site maximizes sharing.

That's why we've used Flickr for years. Similarly, why we use YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, and the other sites we use like Slideshare.

We have entries from people who have created Flickr accounts just to submit photos to the project.

Happy Earth Day!

C'mon DPCers, I know you can share great pics today! Day or night, pretty or ugly.

I'll get one in some time today. We're having a Nor'easter, so not the best weather.

I prefer 500 but still have stuff on Flickr.

Added a photo. It needs some geo information before you can add it, but that's easily done.

Woohoo! I think you're the first entry on the entire planet. :)

Thanks!

You have several days to upload it, as long as it's taken today. Details are at that link.

It's raining here, too, but that can make for some very pretty photos: rain on flowers or grass, trees in the mist, etc. Or go find some trash floating in a stream or rain falling on a rusted hulk.

Thanks!

OK, I'm in. My original plan was to head over to a local lake that had a man made disaster (an oil spill from underground tanks) in January. I've actually had a number of challenge entries from this place and am really sad at the state it's in. link The weather is just too nasty to go though.

Beautiful! I'm sorry about your lake, though.

OK, I played along. Rainy, windy, cold, so I stuck to things in the yard LOL.

I've never been able to get flickr to show location - anyone know how to make it do that? Or is it something I have not set in my camera?

There should be a little map on the side. Click the map and it will let you pick your location.

Nice shortcut. I did it the more difficult way.

Click on your photo, than there's a button called "Actions", click on it and select "Edit location on your map"
