Well, in *theory* it's because the companies that MAKE the cars can't be trusted. Witness the massive recalls recently on Toyotas, all the while the company was lying its ass off about what was going on. That's the excuse, anyway. That kind of thinking. But I trust the government even less than I trust Toyota, so... A pox on all their houses...

I will have to read the article again when I get back from work and play closer attention... I must have missed the logic and legal necessity for this law.

granted this article is written from a privacy advocate POV, but at what point do we put an end to the invasive nature of the government?
every day we let the government have more and more control of us, now i know that most of us dont have anything thing to worry about but you never know. one they may decide, ooh we have these black boxes, lets use them for [fill in your scenario].
maybe the intent is to protect consumers, but im skeptical...

I was looking into this, but dropped it. I'd like a black box feature just to use in court. Something like a 360 camera in the front of my car that would record last 15min.
That way if there was some dispute, I could use that in court.
I was in a major traffic accident a few years ago and I have a loss of memory from that time.
Also, hearing about some scary traffic stops, might be nice to have it recorded. |

that's assuming you have access to the device and my concern s that the government will too, somehow. what if they decided they want to perform an audit of your driving habits and issue speeding tickets? |

I actually, can't wait. I'm sure there will be plenty of hacks by the first launch. |

Some people have their own video cameras (dash-cams), which they seem to have recording whenever they're in the car. For insurance I guess. (?)
A guy in Toronto had his dash-cam on when another guy attempted to run an insurance scam on him. The scammer ended up getting charged with fraud after the story ran in the papers. Some people figured out where the scammer and his family lived via his license plate and then the death threats began. Here's the video, for your entertainment.

Since when do laws require those conditions to be met? |

I'm angry at the company right now for selling me 3 day shipping and failing to clearly disclose that it would take 5 days to fill the order before they shipped.
But... These are cheap, and seem to be very functional.

I bought four of them, and if you'd like to write me in a month asking how they work I'll report back. :) |

It looks like a fun gadget. But I've been driving for 30 years and nothing has ever happened where one would be useful. I'd buy some if they didn't have to be plugged in & could run on some magical power.

I just happen to sell invisible magic power dust that, when combined with batteries, can power all your portable devices. Send me $49.95 for a one month supply and you'll automatically be enrolled in my subscription service and auto-billed each month. Easy breezy. |

If the feds can't make me buy health insurance, why can they make me buy a black box? |

They are not making you buy the black box. ...yet. But it's only a matter of time before they legislate shoving one up our asses. |

They "make" you buy catalytic converters and seatbelts and airbags, don't they? How's this black box gonna be any different? "They" will just change the rules so the manufacturers have to include them in every new vehicle, and you won't have an option.

...you mean use it as a mechanism to penalize those folks who commute long distances to work.
Hey I know, if they really wanted to make tons of money, they could take all of those wonderful government buildings in the big cities and transfer all the jobs to satellite offices in rural areas... just think of all the taxes that would generate.
...And for all of the bikers that would have us stop all vehicular traffic on city streets, they could bike some 30 plus miles to work everyday and really get in shape.
It's a win win situation. :O)

well people that have long commutes already pay a lot in gas tax. getting rid of the gas tax would actually even out those that have fuel efficient cars with those that don't. im actually in favor of a per mile tax.
however i actually rather see a road toll system so that people who use the roads/bridges pay for them as opposed to jacked up system we see now. where that money goes to wherever the feds want to send it. in fact a lot of that money doesn't even go to the roads it goes to other crap. at least with a toll system the money generated for that road/bridge stay somewhat tied to that road /bridge.

Wanna cry... read this.
Canada
Fuel taxes in Canada can vary greatly between locales. On average, about one-third of the total price of gas at the pump is tax. Excise taxes on gasoline and diesel are collected both federal and provincial governments, as well as by some select municipalities (Montreal, Vancouver, and Victoria); with combined excise taxes varying from 16.2 ¢/L (73.6 ¢/imperial gal; 61.2 ¢/US gal) in the Yukon to 30.5 ¢/L ($1.386/imperial gal; $1.153/US gal) in Vancouver. As well, the federal government and some provincial governments (Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, and Quebec) collect sales tax (GST and PST) on top of the retail price and the excise taxes.[8]
... and I travel some 40 miles to work and 40 miles back every day.
