A summary of Good Samaritan Laws for those who are worried about getting sued for helping. Basically, if someone is concious you have to get their permission to help them. If they're unconcious, their consent is implied even if they denied care before losing conciousness.
In Europe and some other countries, the law is "Duty to Rescue" which means that you are obligated to assist people. Even in the US, you have this obligation to your children and spouse.
Aside from helping with minor cuts and little stuff, I've been a "Good Samaritan" more than once. I understand why some people don't (or can't) act, but I can't be that person. |

I will help as long as it is useful
I was in the parking lot of my local mall when I heard a big crash. I got out of the car and was looking at a mother with her 20 year old daughter who just got hit by a SUV. As I started running for the poor girl there was an off duty EMS worker applying a compress to the back of the head where there was more blood than I ever care to see again. Upon realizing that there was NOTHING I could do, I picked up my 40D with a 300mm lens and from a distance took 3 shots....turned around and walked away.
Going into the mall I met a few friends and told them what happened.... After a minute of "YOUR A HORRIBLE PERSON FOR TAKING THE PICTURE" comments, I then got the "CAN I SEE THE PHOTOS?"
I did not show the photos, I showed the police and that was it. I never posted them and I never planned on using them. It was a knee jerk reaction that I taught myself. If I have any emotion, PICK UP THE CAMERA.
1. I would help IF I can make a difference
2. I will take the picture if I can not help
I can not stand by, its just not me |
