I love the steampunk look. Not sure I'm anywhere near creative enough to enter this, but I'd have fun seeing what others do.

Working my way up and down NPR's Top 100 Sci-Fi books and just started Perdido Street Station which, unbeknownst to me beforehand, is clearly steampunk. Hoping it's a decent read.
It would be a fun challenge, but one requiring a great deal of costume and gadgetry to pull off well. |

I enjoyed it a good bit. If you like it, I'd also recommend The Scar by the same author. Some of his other stuff is a little bit odd, but I've not disliked anything.
ETA: Those first two are both superior to Iron Council, in my judging, which is the third in the same universe.

I loved PSS and am a big China Mieville fan. Hope you enjoy it Jason. I like odd and weird very much so he hits my buttons. Its quite grim as well but touching. I agree that The Scar is equally as good (and both better than Iron Council). I think that Mieville really hits his stride with some of his later books, The City & The City and Embasseytown in particular. He's certainly prolific averaging a novel a year- next one out in a few weeks. Yay! Oh, and check out his young adult novel UN-LUN DUN. Great stuff.
Oh, and yay for a Steampunk challenge! |
