Poorly designed fallout shelter? ;P
I'm going to guess a 'bunkhouse' for troops along an old highway - a checkpoint of sorts for travellers but built to house military people and the necessary staff. |

I'm going to give it to kirbic since he was so very close (handling ordinance). My wife and I saw this just off the road going into a state park and she kept trying to figure out what it was - farm building, hay distribution, things along those lines. There is a circular hatch in the ceiling of that front overhang part. I finally spotted the plaque on the front of the building before she did and I told her "I think it might be a a Navy explosives laboratory from WWII that was used to disarm mines and torpedoes." She was impressed with my assessment until I told her about the plaque. ;-)
Here is the secret location. |

Very cool. I guessed what I did because of the projecting beam and the very high door. It seemed likely that something long was loaded/unloaded using a crane running on the beam. That, plus your hint that it was military led me to guess loading/unloading of, well, things like missiles or torpedos, e.g. large ordnance in more general terms.
A 2 MeV X-ray? Yikes! I suspect their source was a radioisotope. I can't imagine an X-ray tube with that kind of punch. Hell, my analytical x-ray machine here at work is considered relatively high-powered, and it maxes at 184KeV, less than one tenth that energy.
I'll look for something here shortly, but I may have to delay until late this evening. I'm going to look at a motorcycle after work today, so I may not be home until 9 PM CDT.

I happen to have more than a passing acquaintance with the airbrush, having been in the graphic arts biz pre-photoshop :-)

Man, we're knocking 'em off here left and right! Ken, I can't believe you got that on the first guess. I was pretty sure you were right, but I don't think I'd have gotten it, even though I have seen and used them.
