| Are you allowed to take a photo of a statue? In the strength challenge, I have noticed that a lot of the pics are statues. Is that allowed? |

This is an interesting question. My take on it is that if you use a creative perspective, angle, or composition that doesn't use the artist's work as a crutch then I think it is okay.

| It seems to me that if you take a pic of someone's stature than you are taking a picture of theur art, right? Unless you have someone looking aat it showing their reaction or something then I don't think its fair to the sculpture.Does anyone agree? |

| Most statues are allowed. Usually, there are shadows, background stuff, or something else that plays into the photo as well. However, if it were a photo of a statue head on, with nothing else that played into the photo (no backgroung, no sky, no shadows, no angle) then it could probably be valid reason to request DQ. However, most statue photo are just fine. |

To answer you seriously (but it is a can of worms)
I do agree with you for the most part.
Folks try to add another element to the shot. |

I disagree.
If the photo is only the statue and cropped to include no sky, background, people, or anything else, then maybe.
But, if there is anything else in the picture, how is this different than taking a picture of any piece of furniture that has an interesting shape or color? What about a motorcycle, building, interesting wine glass, silk tie, blouse, bra, bridge, etc? All are created by designers of one sort or other.
Any of these objects shot well, with an interesting background and lighting are fair game. The lighting, shadows, and attention to texture will make or break the shot.
Taking a picture of a flat piece of art (picture, painting, ink drawing, etc) without anything else is more like copying than shooting a three dimensional object and mapping into two dimensional space as is done in a photo.
I believe the rules support this interpertation:
"Artwork. Literal photographic representations of the entirety of existing works of art (including your own) are not considered acceptable submissions, however creative depictions or interpretations of "art" are permissible. This includes, but is not limited to: paintings, sculptures, photographs, drawings, and computer artwork."

I can't tell you how many times I pick up a book or magazine and see a photograph of a statue. Since there are so many published, and famous photographers guily of this.... has anyone had the courage to write them and tell them they are wrong?
I think once you receive permission to take the photograph, all the other issues become insignificant.
