So If I used opposite ends of the voting scale only I would look like an average voter by the avg cast, but having the breakdown would identify my voting pattern.
Just a suggestion, I think it would be quite interesting. |

You're not selling out to mass appeal now, are you? Perhaps you've finally succeeded in changing what the collective likes and we'll starting seeing wine glasses and water drops browning out soon.

Seem to be lots of lower scores being reported, I really enjoyed voting and felt the majority of images were of an above average standard :)
Stats: You have rated 115 of 115 images (100%) in this challenge.
You have given an average score of 6.0000

I'll agree with you that we could determine what kind of voter someone is, but if someone only voted using 1 and 10, it's perfectly valid. You may not agree with their methodology, but there is a legitimate reason for doing so, and it's only one of many methods to vote.

As per your definition. Is a troll someone who doesn't vote to your expected average? I'm looking for your definition of troll in as precise terms as possible.

Troll = someone who has no other intention but to provoke users into a reaction.
On this site the biggest reaction you will get is v low votes. I understand what one persons trash is another's gold but seriously how many images out of 100 on this site would merit a 1?
DNMC yeah maybe but I don't see out of focus complete cock ups being entered.
The forums are a separate argument for trolls but they lurk in the shadows here too. |

I'm only biting because I dislike that people think just because someone gives out 1s, or low votes for that matter, is a troll. I've outlined how I tend to vote earlier this morning in this thread.
I'm not looking for any kind of reaction, but I do find it old hat how in every scoring thread, it's always:
I don't have the score I want, damn trolls.
I really thought my image was an 8+, but reality is setting in and it's a 5.3.
[Insert whatever here] voters are the worst.
.......
When I see comments like the above, I'm always inclined to introduce a reality check that people can vote how they see fit and it may differ from other's opinions.
You asked about the how many images merit a vote of 1. I'll give you my take on the challenges still present on the front page.
Corners - 10
Double Take - 3
Free Study - 11
Close Your Eyes - 2
If you look at how I vote in the other thread, every challenge is going to have at least one. Someone has to have the worst image relative to the others in any given challenge. This isn't being a troll, it's simply a fact; someone needs to be on the bottom rung and someone on the top.

This is rare... it's usually when people are tracking theirs votes and get a 1 that they cry about trolls -- and with good reason.
Yes someone COULD vote 1s and 10s as a dichotomy for HATE IT - LOVE IT, but I doubt there are many that do when the whole scale is there for their use.
It won't be solved here, the die is cast. We have a 10 point scale and people are free to use it anyway they see fit. You're right on that score (no pun intended). The "norm" however is to use the whole scale with the extremes of high and low being used far less than the middle values.
But since there is no standard for voting, the averages are meaningless here. We almost need a Rotten Tomatoes style of standardizing the scoring... This photo got 73% good votes instead of a 5.6789.

I cant argue with your voting pattern which is fair but it is strange how the open challenges attract lower votes consistently.
I tend to vote 4-10 with only dnmc or truly poor shots attracting the 1-3 range.
Still can't believe my shot hasn't reached an 8 yet, it's genius :-| |

I'm trusting the trolls to stay hidden under their bridges whilst I sleep, I will be gutted if I finish on a 4 something. |

It could have nothing to do with voters, but the submitters. Remember it's free to enter an open challenge, so someone that's beginning in photography and hasn't yet picked up the skills is much more likely to enter. Reference the leap day challenge.

I tend to vote 1-7 with the truly outstanding, genius, or extremely creative shots attracting the 8-10. At the end of the day, I'm sure our voting patterns aren't so different even though our averages are off.

This is where I disagree. One is perfectly valid just like a ten. If a person gets a one, they should wonder where they went wrong. Conversely, if they get a ten, they should also wonder what about their photo kicks so much ass, yet we never hear this. It's pretty pompous to simply accept a ten like you deserved it from the onset yet some openly decry the low voters.

Nice selective editing of my comment.
Regardless 10s are far more rare than 1s.
