Is it a stainless piece intended as a "drive pin" through impact?
Ha, cross posted, LOL.
OK, so it is a stainless mallet... from the surface finish, I presume it is used in a hot environment, perhaps a furnace?

Nope, just heat treated for that finish. It's intended for use in a specific, controlled environment by a specially qualified, highly educated individual. I can pretty much guarantee that neither you or I will ever use this in the way it is intended, though we might know someone who has directly benefitted from its use.

Ah, so if use in the mouth is "close," how about on the head?? Could it be "Maxwell's Silver Hammer?" ;-)
OK, a real guess: is it a mallet used within a nuclear reactor facility?

Nope.
"Dentist" is close because it is used in the health field. It's not used on the head. |

Ah, I see my feeble attempt at humor has failed, LOL.
Is it a mallet intended for inserting a prosthesis into bone?

It is exactly that. During a hip replacement, after the surgeon has sawn off the ball on the end of the femur and drilled the hole for the implant, he uses this hammer to pound it in. |

Yep. I thought this one might take a while, I've never seen a tape dispenser that works the way this one does...not that it's a good design. |
