Oops, you gave it away. I should have recognized it, since I used to work in HVAC, but we don't use draft control dampers like that here in Florida. Most of the heat for domestic here is electric or reverse cycle.
This was a good head scratcher of a mystery item. BTW, that looks a lot like the damper in the vents on a 64 chevy if you take it out and hold it in your hand. : )

It's definitely not brass, but the right basic function. It has a specific purpose and it's definitely not something for the home toolkit. |
