Cool :)

I'm happy to let Yo_Spiff take the turn he missed out on earlier in the thread as I was just popping in and don't have anything to post, sorry..

Thanks. Let me go hunt up a whatsit...

Sorry, go distracted by minor things. Like work.

It's the cones for a kiln...they tell how hot it was by which ones melt.

I figured someone that knew ceramics might easily recognize it. You're up.

So I guess it wasn't the elephant trunk thing. :-(

Here's one:

Now the hard part. Identify the item, and then identify the background!
03/30/2012 11:28:49 AM · #2013
The background appears to be an armature, the whatsit looks like a pickup coil or RF choke.
03/30/2012 11:46:39 AM · #2014
300 lb RF choke, on the tail gate of a rusty pickup truck?
eta, Shot at f1.2 for shallow depth of field?

electromagnet for a motor and the BG is the rotor
03/30/2012 11:51:38 AM · #2016
Pickup sensor for an inductive tachometer?
03/30/2012 11:56:09 AM · #2017
You're all on the right track for the whatsit, in fact I think y'all are getting *too* specific. As Ken posted, it can be used as a choke, it is an inductor. Knowing my audience, I figured that part would be easy. Now about that background...
- "think small"
- Yep, that DoF sure is shallow... but *not* shot at f/1.2 or anything close. So how does that happen then?? :-)

ETA:
The background is not either a rusty pickup gate nor a rotor.

This might be too generic, but is it copper shielding, and/or a ground plane?
03/30/2012 12:06:17 PM · #2019
Primary working parts of a linear induction motor, the coil and track, or are you building a cannon? It's easy to see that the items are pretty small.
eta Canon= rail gun.

In my best Monty Burns voice, "Eeeeeexcellent!"
Y'all were swifter than I thought on that! Here's a wider view:

Woohoo!
I'm stepping out the door from work right now so will post something when I get home.

OK, other than being a poorly taken shot, what is it?
