I am not jumping on the upgrade bandwagon just yet.
I'm happy with the MK 2 ISO , shutter and focus pts at the moment.
And the fact that the MK 3 is only few MP higher, is not an instant sale to me.

The quality at iso 6400 is brilliant. the amount of noise on the whole is so low. the feel and build is top notch. and has 6fps which for me really helps, as a wildlife photographer wanting quality and now speed too! |
Does it mean you'll never use a tripod again? |
In order to achieve a top notch landscape shot which usually takes place during dusk or dawn, you will always need a tripod regardless. If the camera technology becomes so advanced one day that say an ISO 12,800 will produce the same image quality that say today's 5D Mark II does at ISO 100, you will still need a tripod in order to compete with the images shot at ISO 100 for that time period. |
you speak the truth man :-)
I just hate lugging them around!! especially in 40degrees |

i'd look at the two and judge that for your usage, will you notice a 'drastic' change in picture quality over the 1mp? and if so, will it be noticable enough to spend the money?
do you need this now? could/would you be able to wait until the mk4 comes out to buy the mk3 at a lower price (or the mk4 for a similar price to the 3 now)?
all factors to consider... |
You can do that...eventually you will still be using a 6mp camera and everyone else is up around the 30mp...why? Because you kept procrastinating. I have a rule that I will generally follow. I wait 12 to 18 months after a upgrade is released. So not only do I eliminate any teething problems a new camera might go through but here in Australia that 12 to 18 months also drops the price by approximately $1000. Enough for another lens maybe?
I will let you in on a little secret. The other night, my Canon contact showed me promotional video footage that has not been released publicly. Wow....I was blown away. This baby rocks and whilst you may think you don't need it....well that is your choice. But really, if you can afford the camera and you could utilise what it has to offer....then seriously consider it. Think about why you bought your current camera....you didn't compromise did you? You bought something that would fit what you needed at the time! The same with any camera....give it a chance!
So whilst I agree it is a big investment for many of you...if you are serious about your photography, you have the available funds and you think you can use this camera....then rethink your decision on sticking with the MkII or the 550D...(which I will add is not as good as the 5D!!!!). LOL!!

While it isn't a big selling point to the DPC community, a lot of the improvements in the III seem to be for video work. As bandwith gets bigger and bigger, a lot of clients who used to only want images are asking for supplemental video work in weddings, real estate photography' business branding and the like. |

The whole camera was designed for the creative photographer. Whilst there is improvements on the video side, there are also some major developments on the still photography side!

I agree with Judi... we'll have to wait a few months, but I think that user opinion will confirm what she is saying. I think this one is going to be a force to be reckoned with.
The MK III does seem to be more of an evolution than a revolution, but the combination of features, even at this price point, is pretty compelling.
That said, I'm sure that many who own a MK II will not see a compelling reason to upgrade, there not being enough forward movement in their area of focus.
ETA:
Even though I'm not intensely interested in the video aspect, I'm very interested in how the MK III advances the video quality we saw from the MK II, particularly in the area of the rolling shutter.

I was being facetious!! I cannot comprehend anyone thinking the 550D is as good as the 5D...but that is just my opinion and I will leave that argument to that appropriate thread.

If you swing over to fred someone posted some ISO 25K & 12K images from it.... I GOTA stop looking at those threads.... My bank manager will freak (i.e. the better half) :-(
Edit: The noise does not like the bad digital noise IMO... yeah it is but it's got that something the %D series seems to have.

Just got mine this afternoon.
At 12800 ISO, I can shoot f/1.2 at 1/8000 (just testing)
This is taken at 5.30pm in a dim entrance hall with pretty low light levels.
This is straight out of the camera. Zero edit.
Pretty good noise performance for 12800 ISO!
(Max on his way out to basketball - turning as usual). |

But if you come from a 350D, then there is one, especially if you want to go full frame :-)
Slaver ... |

Why? Because you have the money and you want it. |
