I was looking over old images and it brought up a topic where I know I need improvement. I have a question about cropping and I have an example, but I was looking for some overall pointers for the "cropping process."

Do you crop at the beginning or end of your workflow? Personally I like to wait until the end because I am always changing my mind about the whole thing, plus it is always good to have more flexibility. Then again, I wonder if I'm just afraid to commit to something and that's the whole problem!

Do you consider perspective when cropping? In my example photo, I wanted to emphasize the smallness of the ant and I feel negative space is needed for that, however there is a balance in that the ant in the full size image is very small.

I appreciate any and all advice on this topic.

The image (and this is only a specific non-portrait example):

Another question: How can I decide when less is more? (i.e. tighter crop for a more interesting image). I know there is not a formula, but are there guidelines I can use?

I would have not noticed the ant if you did not mention it. It is waaay too much negative space :)

I'm allergic to cropping - it cuts away perfectly wonderful information!
Whenever possible, I fill the frame and/or compose my shots in such a way that I won't NEED to crop.

When I do crop, I tend to adhere to "the rules" and/or go for a particular aspect ratio.

I like the negative space with regards to the ant. If you didn't have the ant and the negative space then i don't think it's much of an interesting photo really. It's just a flower. And who wants to se a photo of a flower? Florists maybe. Or the romantic. I like the photo as it is.

This is the uncropped image and I don't have a macro lens. :) (I figured I had better mention the ant!)

when i crop i always try to place the focal point of the image where i want it and that is usually on the intersection of a third point. when you crop, the third point lines pop up for a reason. let them show you the way.
