No big swings here. Started at about 5.3 and is now at 5.0. Very impressive, yes? |

Up and down... by around d 1/2 a point. There's a lot of really awesome entries! Mines doing OK..
I wonder if some of the lower votes are being given because people don't see a building? Or a city? In some of the entries

I'll be honest and say upfront that I found a few entries DNMC. More than I would have expected.
I can almost imagine a conversation where some people don't see how a "shades of grey blur" (of which there were several entries) doesn't meet criteria and that people who low-vote them "don't understand the genius of the piece".
Well, that may be the case, but this is a photography challenge, not a modern art exhibit, so i don't feel bad about how i scored the images.
That said, there were some absolutely AMAZING shots in here, i'm impressed with the vantage points some people found and the skill with several of the night-time city shots to have them come out that spectacularly.

I wonder how you are going to score the Art of 2011 challenge? |

You're free to judge and vote however you want. If you narrow your mind to decide that the only thing that qualifies as "Urban Landscape" is nighttime eye-candy from a major city, that's up to you. Thankfully, not everyone will agree.
And photography, especially digital photography IS a modern art. Not too many people on DPC doing tintypes I'd bet.

Scoring other people? Based on how i take the concept of the image as art. Since art is subjective it will be very much based on how it speaks to me more than Just technical skill; though points will still be awarded on technical merit as that also holds it's place in photographic art.
Some of the "shades of grey" images may have been 3-5 full points higher if this was an "art" style challenge and the title, or apparent meaning were indicative of a parallel to city-scapes/skylines.
I left comments on some of the images in this challenge indicating that I wasn't sure what i was supposed to be seeing, i didn't just troll the images and give low marks.
As for how i figure i'll personally score with my entry in the art of 2011, i'm guessing somewhere between a 3.5 and 4.25 because many people may not see my entry as artistic enough, but to me it's the very essence of so much of my culture and upbringing.

I don't just think that "nighttime eye candy" is urban landscape. Urban is the city and surrounding areas, including the geographic landscape that defines the area. And I'm not trying to be overly critical of people's work, it may not be what I would have chosen to shoot, but for better or worse it's what they shot, and i'm guessing at Least 75% of the shots will be 'for the better'.
I'm not here to try to make enemies, i'm here to try to improve my own photography skills and a big part of that is seeing other peoples images here, what i like and don't like and opening myself to new ideas. But with anything subjective, you will always have polarized people on either end, or a crowd of ho-hum/blah. I'm very much a middle-of-the-road guy and spend my life being ho-hum. I may not appreciate some of the more artistic entries now (honestly i don't know if i'll ever truly get Some modern art) but I'm here to help open myself to other ideas. At the moment, no, i don't see how some of those grey-scapes relate to urban landscape; for all i know that could be the point, it's just a mass of grey nothingness that these people see city life as. It could be something else entirely.
Right now I don't see (or haven't been informed of) what they're aiming for and so I vote on them with a clear conscious that this is what i feel; and i expect others to do the same to me. I figure if i ever win a ribbon here it will be cause for much celebration on my part, but as mentioned above, i'm here to learn first. :)
Anyways, enough rambling on my part, i'll stop before i make any more potentially offensive/flame-war-inducing statements.

As an aside, the challenge description is: Of, relating to, or located in a city. |

I went through the trouble of counting the city nightscapes in this challenge and they constitute about 25% of all entries. BUT I bet that the Top 10 will have at least 40% of nightscapes. To me this is shooting stereotypes for higher scores (apologies in advance to some very good photogs - I just wish you tried to be more creative and shoot for yourself!!)
PS I know what comes next in reply to this but I wanted to say that. It is tiring how many DPCers shoot to please the average voter. |

Makes sense. Personally, I shoot and open to *my* liking. If others find the beauty in it, that's great. If not, well... to each their own.
Plus, I'm looking to improve my skills, so some comments I take to heart. :)

No worries. Just keep in mind that other people may not think inside your box. |

There is no "outside the box". We are just all in different boxes.

I'm trying to not limit myself to my own box, but on some things i still see a box :)
I just don't want you to misconstrue what I said to think i'm only interested in the night-time shots. I had tried several night scenes myself and wasn't happy with any of them, i was merely commenting that *some* of them were really well done, and that other shots in general had some really cool vantage points. :) |

Margaret
i agree in principle. however, for me, night photography (and esp of cityscapes) is pretty new, so i think those of use like me need to walk the ground already trodden before to get our skills honed before going way off the beaten path.
p.s. i think the proliferation of HDR software had really allowed many to get good night shots that they might not otherwise get

Like submitting a day time shot in a night landscapes challenge that kind of thinking?
another explanation might be people only had time to shoot after work so the only choice they had was night time?

Last 16 votes were all above 6, to finally bring me above 6.
Wrote my own tracker at work that manually updates the page so I can keep track. Hate this website.
