anyone have opinions pro/con on FilterForge? I may be in the market to expand my photo processing software. I mostly use Capture NX2, and Canvas X when I need more "effects". However, I recently tried a few of the FilterForge freebies and found them quite good. The new version of FilterForge is on sale for 50% off for the next few days... still would be close to $200, so need to make an informed decision.
any feedback much appreciated.

I've used the freebies before, when playing in side challenges here on DPC. I don't think I would bother with the paid software though. Just my opinion, I think $200 is pretty pricey on the whole for what it is.
I'm sure DPC is not the only thing to consider when buying software, but these filters are not legal in any editing rules except maybe expert (and I'm not even sure about expert). |

I've got Filter Forge 3. It's good to play with, but as salmiakkipoints out you can't use it for normal challenges. They have an extensive library of filters and if you are clever enough (I'm not) you can create your own. It probably depends on what you want to do. I find that although there are some filters I really like a lot of them are a bit gimmicky. You might be better with Topaz or something else.

Are you saying NONE of the FilterForge filters are legal, even under Advanced Editing? Even the ones that are changes to things like grain, color, contrast, etc, are not legal? (Obviously the fancy ones that add the 3-D bump maps or make something look like metal would be illegal.)
I searched for "Filter Forge" in the forums and did not find any threads discussing it, let alone indicating that it would be illegal.

I don't know about the full software package, as I said earlier, I've only tried the freebies, and haven't even opened any of those in over a year. I suppose there are some that are legal, as you say, if they are just changing the saturation, contrast etc, I only really used the ones that were textures, frames etc. I still think there are far better plugins than FilterForge, but it depends what you want to use them for.

There isn't anything in filter forge that you can't do in topaz much better. I tried the free trial ages ago, and still have the freebies on my computer, but rarely use them any more. |

I think it's precisely because Filter Forge has never been addressed specifically that I've played it safe and treated it as suspect (and I did raise the issue once in a thread but got no real answer because I might have bundled it with other software in my question). I have used Filter Forge vibrance from the freebie range a few times because I'm not using sliders (although there is the option to make custom presets.)
