This would definitely be fun to enter and interesting to vote on. I think it would push me out of my comfort zone, and I need to do that more often. |

Funny I'd typed "you can put your bottom lip away now ;) " on another tab but not posted it yet in the morning chaos of kids and dogs |

I'm not getting this. What are the entries going to be judged on? |

How's this going to work? I'm not even sure how to distinguish an artistic photograph? Maybe if we know the panel members we can browse their images and understand how to shoot for this challenge. Seems to me an image that scored 5.5 in a free study will score the same in an art free study challenge.
If you are looking for more creative entries a "throw your score away" challenge might work. A high score is success on DPC and also the biggest deterrent to trying new things. Members interested in shooting for score would avoid the challenge and those looking for critique would participate. There is a "what's your score?" thread during every challenge and this is very important to many but not all members. I've read a hundred times "This is my highest score ever hope it holds on", "I thought this would score higher" or "how can I take a photograph that scores higher?" If you only chase high score success you are missing out on what's beautiful about this site. So many unique stories and perspectives are expressed here everyday.
Just my 2 cents. |

We're not shooting for this challenge - it has to be something you shot last year. |

Basically, the other Fine Arts challenges were Free Studies, as well, and the photos entered were of a vastly different nature, I would say. Even the images voted the highest were of a different nature, but the jury results were obviously of a different vein, as well. |

Sorry if I missed it somewhere here on DPC but who is on the jury this time around?
Last time we had the Fine Arts challenge there was a known group. For me personally it can make a difference in what's submitted, as is the case for any photography competition with a select panel of judges.
The challenge description has "Extra rules" and states: "This challenge has the added benefit of being juried." Then it points to this thread for the "see discussion" link. ???! |

Quite clear about this being Art, as opposed to Fine Art. This is not a Fine Art challenge, like we have previously had. |

It would be funny if everyone thinks there's a super secret jury when in fact one actually needs to be formed.
And now I'll actually have to look back at the 2011 images. I had decided on my best of in June or something.

Indeed, this is the concept and vision behind the just announced Art 2011 challenge. Nothing more, nothing less. |

Wow! That's kind of ballsy...kicking off the challenge without having a jury in place. I hope the panel is announced soon. |

And with all of the discussions in the best of scores thread,
Let's see if we can have an Art of 2011 challenge.
Challenge description: You've submitted your best photograph of 2011, but it may not be your most artistic shot. Here's your chance. Find a shot taken in 2011 that fits your definitition of "art".
There's still time -- if we can talk Langdon into doing it quickly, we probably still have some things in the back of our mind from searching for best of.
If you're interested, respond here, but I'm also posting it on the get satisfaction DPC ideas site -- maybe we'd get more notice if we responded there.

awww... Don't ruin the original idea!! This is supposed to be our chance to really consider our photos and how we describe art. Not how we think someone else defines art!
Ignore the jury. This is about you and what speaks to you as an artist. Enjoy the original intent -- the exploration of your own work. And the exploration of what you consider art.
Ignore the jury.

Wendy - I understand your sentiment. However, if I boil my choices down to two or three and each one is somewhat unique, then who is on the jury panel could influence my decision. |

If there is one challenge where we shouldn't be thinking about the result, this is it. Art is ambiguous and everybody has their idea about what art is, personally the only person i will be trying to please in this one is me, we can't lose in this one.

Ok...so no scores or virtual ribbons being handed out on this one then? |
