As I have voted on a few challenges, and especially during the "Euphemism" challenge, I have found myself stuck between votes. I can't quite decide if I should vote it a 6 or 7, 7 or 8, 8 or 9, etc. If there was a 6.5, 7.5, 8.5, etc, it would be much easier. Most of the time, if I can't decide between two particular numbers, I give them the higher one... but it would definitely make voting (for me) a little easier.
Anyone else feel the same? Just stuck sometimes. lol

The only .5 I feel would be good, would be 5.5. I think .5 in between every number would be excessive.

Ten vote "buckets" are probably enough. It's not a bad thing to be pressed into making a decision between, say, "6" and "7". The aggregate total of all such decisions by hundreds of voters produces the image score differentiation out to 4 decimal places. It's a pretty good voting system.

I have had that happen on a number of occasions - the 'in-between decision'. Does this get a 6 or 7, a 7 or 8, etc. etc.
When those occasions crop up I just do an assessment of the strengths & weaknesses (areas that could improve) of the picture. If the strengths outweigh the weaknesses than the picture in question gets the higher score. If the weaknesses outpace the strengths, then the picture will get the lower mark.

Edit to add: Forgot to mention this. When those occasions arise that I do the assessment it makes me study the picture more and I find that I give the higher mark 80% of the time.

I do agree that it would probably be excessive, and I don't really understand the logic in having a 5.5 but no other .5's.
I also agree that when I am stuck and cannot decide, I tend to study the picture more as well, and most of the time, I end up going with the higher of the two (most of the time). I do feel it's a good voting system, I just don't like feeling "stuck between a rock and hard place" lol, had to throw that in there... you know, with the current challenge and all. :)

I think a 5.5 wouldn't be bad but not sure it is necessary. Right now there is no middle vote. 1 2 3 4 5 (Middle) 6 7 8 9 10. So a 5.5 would fall right in the middle of the voting scale. Personally the way I vote this isn't an issue but if there was a 5.5 I would likely use it.

I usually revisit all images but if its a tricky one like you mention then I will go back many more times till I am happy with the figure.

Why don't we just make the scale 1-100, that should suit everyone's needs.

As long as there's .5's available lol

Do you vote between 1 and 10 in challenges normally?

I often have a similar predicament (which is why I tend to comb through my votes 2 or 3 times to separate them all out) - but then I pretty much never give 10's or 1's, and 2's, 3's and 9's are rare from me also, so that already eliminates half the voting scale for me under normal circumstances - which is a habit I'm trying to break from.

I think 10 levels to separate images in to is more than enough for almost any challenge on this site, the problem for most of us is breaking out of our own arbitrary definitions of what a '4' etc. should be and to just use the scale in the context of the challenge at hand. That would be the fairest (and most useful) voting method imo.

I usually use 4 to 9. RARELY do I use less than a 4. I've never given a 1 and have given one 2. For a pic to get a 10, it really has to stand out to me. I mostly give out 6, 7, and 8s. But then again, I find beauty in many different things.

The main issue with .5 votes other than are they needed, is you could not keyboard vote a half vote (5.5, 6.5,etc.)

I think the 1-10 scale as-is, is good enough and don't need changing. But if DPC did decide to change the voting system I would like to see a slider vote scale.
Left side (bad), Right side (good), no numbers in-between. Slide the slider to any position in between. The further left you place the slide the lower the vote, likewise the further right you place the slider the higher the vote.

I also thought about a slider scale... if if there were numbers( as a general guide)

maybe we should just simplify everything to "like" or "dislike", thumbs up or thumbs down, the way Facebook and all the other social media have trivialized the world

Lol. Even better.

Note: I am being sarcastic

All the discussion about .5 votes, changing the voting scale (for me at least) is based on if DPC changed the scale, etc. As I said before I think the 1-10 scale as-is, is good enough.
Something I would like to see is a time restraint on each photo when voting and a couple of other changes.

Here they are,

1. No thumbnail viewing except for the photo's you have voted on. Same with commenting.
2. After voting 100%, then you would be granted access to all thumbnails and would be able to adjust your score if needed.
3. While voting or commenting, each photo would stay on page for a minimum of 5-seconds before you would be able to go to the next photo.

Just some things I think would be of help during voting.

I like the thumbnail viewing. Usually, I will look at the thumbnails before actually voting to get an idea of the entries. I then begin voting... but I also vote on 100%... not the minimum of 20%.

+1 to all of this.
* Thumbnails - this would stop 'picking' out the few to vote on as some people do
* Min 5 seconds would hopefully cause people to stop and look longer.

Scott - is this up at the satisfaction site?

Have you tried:

1) Eenie, meenie...
2) Rock, paper, scissors...
or
3) Rock, paper, scissors, lizard, spock?
02/29/2012 07:54:45 PM · #20
Perhaps thumbnails could be left, but first 20% are locked values that each participant must vote on before proceeding to the remainder of the images. I enjoy seeing the variety of what is in the challenge prior to voting.

Eta: images are still randomized

5 second hold per image is WAAAYYY! to long ... i know when they do these holds at work during the online training sessions it really pisses people off, esp if you can read faster than a 4th grader... most people's brains are even faster at processing (and judging) a totally visual image ...

A good image will capture your attention and draw you in...no 5 second hold needed.

Not that I know of.
