So I was wondering about validation. Since I'm new to the challenges and all, and I have read some information regarding validation here on the forums, but I'm still a little fuzzy on all the details.
The top images after voting has ended require validation, correct?
However, images can be required to submit validation prior to this, which is usually due to someone believing that some editing rule (or something else) may be illegal, right?
And when one has to submit their original entry, it has to be as the image was recorded directly from the camera. But what if you are shooting in both RAW and JPEG? Do you send the RAW file, or the JPEG? Or does it even matter?
I just want to be sure of all of this.
And, do people usually have to send in proof early in the voting stage? I saw there was something about sending in proof if you are going to be away from your computer (as a precautionary measure, I assume).
Thanks for the input. It is much appreciated. :)

Always send the RAW file if you have one. No need to send both. The top 5 always require validation. The rest is pretty random. |

Correct. There is a checkbox under every challenge entry that can be clicked when voting. A dialog will then come up asking why you believe the entry may violate challenge rules. SC will then send a validation request to the member.

Send the one you used as your original. If you edited from the RAW file, send that. If the JPG was your starting point, then send it.

I have had one case where I should have done that. I went on vacation and didn't think that my entry that was pulling in the high 6's could ribbon. I didn't submit it in advance, nor did I have the RAW file with me. Fortunately, I was able to walk a friend through finding it on my computer and uploading it. Some people may submit in advance if they think others might question the legality of the shot.

In every challenge, the top 5 placings are required to submit original files (straight from the camera) along with a list of processing steps taken to arrive at final image. 48 hours is allowed, but the sooner the better because 48 hour deadline is hard and fast. If one or more of the top 5 are DQd, then images moving into the top 5 spots are then required to submit file(s) and steps for validation.
Other images in any challenge may be selected for validation. Reports of suspected rules violations from members and users are taken into consideration, but an image won't be required to be validated unless at least a few Site Council members agree there may be an issue. In other words, challenge submissions are never randomly selected for validation review. And, a report of suspected rules violation does not automatically trigger a validation request.
The file to submit for validation has to be an unaltered file directly from the camera. Copy from the storage card directly to your computer storage without an intervening processing software changing the file. RAW or JPG are okay, as long as they are the same as files written by the camera, as opposed to a processing software converted JPG.
If I'm going to be away from my computer at the end of the voting phase, I'll submit original(s) and processing steps before I leave home.
Submitting a validation file and steps does not guarantee any kind of response from the SC.
Sometimes, a completed validation during the voting phase will be accompanied by a message below the image (still in voting) that "This image has been validated." Only sometimes.

Thanks guys! I appreciate the help from you guys. Just want to make sure I completely understand the process. Perhaps I should have posted this before I entered a challenge; though it doesn't really matter when it was asked, I suppose. :)

Another question, after reviewing the rules of basic editing:
It is stated that you may
saturate, desaturate or change the colors of your entry, but no selections are allowed
When it states no selections are allowed, you can still choose to select the yellow hue (or red, or green, or blue, etc) and increase or decrease saturation, correct? Because it would be a global change, affecting ALL of the yellow hue (or red, or green, or blue, etc).
Just want to clarify.
Because now I am wondering if something I did was legal, or illegal.

Yes, it's fine. By selection they mean selecting something on the picture itself, not selecting something out of the menu. |

Another question about validations... I know they say it usually takes 48 hours to be validated, but it could take longer. My question is that once your image is validated, do you receive a PM or an email or something?
And... if you have a request for validation, does it ALWAYS get validated? Like has there ever been a time when there was a validation request but they didn't validate?

Yes, you should always recieve an email stating that the image was either validated or DQd, assuming that we'd already requested you to provide your original & editing steps.

Validations can take a long time, especially if there's something the SC are discussing about an image, but we always decide one way or the other.

the exact answer is..... usually, but not always. LOL!!!
I'm still waiting on one validation notice from 3 weeks ago. It may come some day. Usually, sooner or later, the validation notice will arrive via email. |

It's been about 6 days since my first ribbon and I'm still waiting for validation. You have to go out of your way to break the rules in an expert editing challenge, but it still makes me nervous :)
