I think my cat is still pissed over the last photo, she won't cooperate so I need to find something else.

Hey isn't that a copyright violation of Bear's trademark saying?

Definitely a copyright infringement! :)

But, he's Bear's adopted cub, so I think it's ok. ;D

It's a trademark, not copyright, and I believe the Bear's is only je x 3 ... my question is whether he'll dare to submit a self-portrait to this challenge ... ;-)

Nothing wrong with a naturally occurring monochrome. General appeal will depend on the tonal range in your image. Sometimes, the techniques used in the conversion to monochrome can add punch. For example, this aspen grove was ok in color, but popped when converted to b&w.

I might be missing the heart of your question. Were you going to go with the B&W animal and a color bg? I wouldn't object, but there might be an expectation of images being not selective desat.

will sepia be frowned upon in this B&W challenge??
02/18/2012 10:36:30 PM · #38
There certainly has been sepia images in b&w challenges before. I can't remember if they were frowned upon. But I'm thinking that overall the weren't.

found one -- this came in 8th in the black&white challenge in 2011

Thinking out loud.... black& white is what was called monochrome in the past. In the same family they had cyanotype, sepia, etc etc. All of these are monochrome. But all of a sudden I have a feeling that sepia may be Waterloo.

Wikipedia includes some interesting reading; //en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monochrome.

Personally any image that are 'grey scale' should be acceptable.

I don't think toning, in moderation, will be an issue. The Jagar image Wendy posted is a good example of sepia toning "in moderation". It's a "warm B/W". Slenium toning if you want a cool effect. But I'd stay away from blue toning, yellow toning, that kind of stuff.

I knew there was a reason I disliked converting pictures to b/w... My potential entry is driving me nuts.

Took your advice and just submitted the last edit even though I'm itching to redo it. B/W just makes me twitchy.

Naw. Ignore the advice, go download a trial copy of silver efex pro and have fun. I never liked converting to b&w until I started play with SEP. It is a blast!

You know what, I did download the demo today!! It really is a lot of fun to work with but sometimes I start worrying about enough contrast not enough contrast which is really such a mountain out of a molehill thing and even great software can't prevent that.

My gut feeling regarding the challenge is my outtakes would do better but I'm too hung up on one image to let it go. That's why I'm just closing my eyes and entering.

I think someone answered this question but I'm not sure. Is it acceptable to take a picture in color and then convert to black and white? Never entered before but thought I might dive in with one I took today, but don't want to break any rules.

Yes, this is legal in all of the rule sets (including minimal, but it is limited to a simple desaturate there).

That's what I did, too. (After looking at the histogram.)
