so i forgot to renew my parking pass at the college this year.
the other day i got a parking ticket for $60.
so go online to buy renew my parking pass and the price for the year is $100. the "year" started last September.
screw that. i'll take my chances for getting another parking ticket. i'm not paying $100 (plus my fine) for two more months of parking.
what a joke.

$100 bucks a year is damn cheap in Philly. When I was working over there I paid $80 a month for my parking pass. |

I was thinking $100 a year was expensive....esspecially for college parking...It is $50 a year here...Then $ 40 for each parking ticket if you don't have one...after 2 tickets they start putting a boot on your car

i made it a semester and a half with only one ticket, I'm thinking it may be worth the risk. i'd only be out $20 than the parking pass if i get another ticket.
and i'f i get two more tickets i'd still almost break even than if i buy the pass now.

the real kicker is there is NO street parking at the school, they only have lots, so they force commuters to buy parking passes.
its not like they dont charge enough for tuition. |

Mine was a commuter school as well. There were strip malls you could park at nearby but everyone told me not to risk it. 44/semester for a sticker 66 for a hanging tag. The kicker for me is that STAFF has to pay 150/semester. Ummm... wouldn't you think staff would get to park for free? My friend was a grad student/undergrad prof, so of course she just kept buying the student pass as she was making peanuts to begin with.
It's insane this massive money-making scheme they've got all set up, esp now that a BA doesn't get you much. We grew up with our parent's saying 'go to college! Have a better future!' but I have plenty of friends who got out, couldn't find a "real" job and went back to the grocery and department stores they were at before they got a degree but now give up a huge portion of their already meager pay to crushing student loans.
I've gotten myself into a few fights with friends ending up looking at me like I'm in immoral jerk (which I assure you I'm not) because I think people should stop paying their student loans. But I guess that's for another rant. ;) |

Philly was the worst! I lucked out so much when I lived there. Plenty of free street parking on my block, but just up the street away was timed metered parking. I barely used my car unless I absolutely had to when I lived there. Mostly took the bus or got carted around on the back of my then-boyfriend's tandem. (I had a huge bike phobia at the time so I didn't do much solo riding until I moved away.) |

Philly is the worst. That's why that TV show Parking Wars does so well. LOL! I worked in Center City, no free parking anywhere. I took the train for a few years, and walked quite a distance. Then I blew out my knee, had surgery and said no more, I'd rather pay. |

if the school was IN the city i could see, but its Rowan U in South Jersey, there is no reason to charge student $100 a year to park. there is nothing else around, if you are parking there, its to go to class or use some campus facility. There is no other reason to park there.
in the city i could see it being to keep spots available for campus users, this is nothing but a money making scam.

Sorry should clarify my school was in Orlando (not Philly)... or rather suburbs outside of Orlando. It too had not much else around but strip malls, suburbs and big roads. And for as much as you paid, it was still a war to get a good parking spot, at least people claimed. I had a few spots that were the furthest away that I knew to go to and I'd be fine, but people wanting closer ones were very often late to class because they couldn't find a spot. When I took the city bus it was 1.5 hr commute for what was a 25 minute drive, so public transit wasn't much help either. |

Parking in Toronto costs more than I paid as rent when I was a student. Funny, as the parking spots don't even have a toilet or kitchen.

well i chickened out, i went ahead and renewed my parking permit.
i did however appeal the fine. I told them i forgot to renew my parking permit and the school failed to remind me at the beginning of the year that it lapsed. I also told them that the lot in which i parked failed to have a sign indicating a permit was required that "was able to be read while driving a vehicle" . Those being the circumstances, a warning should have been issued instead of a $60 fine and that i had also renewed my permit after receiving the fine.
I just got an email that i won my appeal. :)

I call parking tickets a driving tax (or parking tax). I lived in an apartment with street parking that had no parking for Mondays (street cleaning). Every Monday holiday when I was out of town, I always forgot to move my truck and would get a ticket.
Damn parking tax. |
