thanks for the info.

i was wondering myself if i would like a ball head or not, i never used one, and they seem that they would be a pain to lock into place if it wasn't high quality.

but at least i have an idea what im looking for now. however it still seems vague when it comes to what brands are good without input for someone who tried them.

with my manrotto ball head with a 5d battery grip and L lens id have to allow a little sink room so compose slightly above lock off and allow to settle a couple of mm, not with the pan and tilt head though

i'll have to get one of those L plates i think for my pan and tilt

The good ones last nearly forever. Some parts might need replacing, but not the bones.

The ballhead's junk. 132 bucks for the legs (with shipping) is no bargain.

I have a usable Manfrotto 3-way head I can sell you for 35 dollars plus shipping that will do you until you feel the need to go bigger. It uses the RC2 plates, and we migrated up to RC4 plates, but I used it for several years with no problems at all. So you can get a good set of legs and then upgrade heads when you see where ya want to go.

ETA: that's the 3030 head as seen here. It's been superseded by the 804 RC2, but they're basically the same thing.

i may take you up. the Alta Pro price just got jacked up to over $200 since Saturday for some reason, so maybe i will just get some legs.

probably my bet bet anyway it seems.

so now please educate my on the plates... why the change?

edit:

Manfrotto-055XPROB

or

Manfrotto-190XPROB

the 190 isn't as strong and not as tall but its also a pound lighter

i think i found my legs:

//www.manfrotto.us/294-aluminum-3-section-tripod?alt=1

taller than the 190 series and lighter than the 55 series.

or should i give up some lightness and go with the 55 series and get the option to drop the extension horizontal?

You want the 55; the horizontal cantilever is fantastic. That's Penny's tripod, very nice. Mine's the slightly older version. When we bought hers, we got the beefier head because because it had built-in levels, basically; so I upgraded my head so we'd both be using the same plate, basically, so we could schlep only one tripod around on plane flights and such.

I agree with Robert about the horizontal being very useful.
I have basically this I do believe it also comes with a bag and strap, which is sorta nice.
Mine is an older version, but it's pretty similar, and that capability is super useful. The horizontal on these (both mine and Manfrotto) isn't suited for super heavy setups, so be ready for that. I encountered problems with heavier lens setups (I also always have a grip).
In general though, if you aren't walking super far, the weight penalty isn't a big deal, but the functionality is very useful.

thanks guys.

i went with the Manfrotto 055XPROB Pro Tripod Legs and the Giottos MH 5011 3-way Head.

i was going to get the Manfrotto 804RC2 but too many no so great reviews.

I have 055PROB CF with Arca Swiss B1 Super sturdy, Absolutely no sinking after you compose, No problem with heavy lens on horizontal.... it will move only if you or someone else kicks it.

from the film snatch

Boris 'The Blade' Yurinov: [referring to Tommy's gun] Heavy is good, heavy is reliable. If it doesn't work you can always hit them with it. hehe

When it comes to your everyday tripod, heavy = good. There's no real substitute for mass. Granted, you can add mass to a lighter tripod by hanging weights from it, which is what backpackers do (mesh bags and rocks, typically) but that's a hassle for everyday work. Basically, more mass = better vibration dampening.
