ive seen in the past challenges where entries had to contain say a glass and ice or rubber ducky etc or landscape at home etc where they were specific and less open to interpretations(shoe horns ;) )
do these come around again? or have the dropped off in more recent times?
rubber ducky

In the name of all that is good and right - please no!
Object-based photography is worst stuff we get asked to do. |

it was more a question than a suggestion but didnt know which forum to post in, i was thinking along the lines that it was less popular because it meant specifically shooting for a challenge as opposed to shoe horning |

...Can't agree with the last comment. It truly was refreshing to have a contest where there were specifics to be met and that eradicated the possibility of shoehorns.
Mind you... some would argue that it eliminated creative thinking.... you know, those images where anything goes and the voting public has to guess what is being proffered, not appreciating just how avant-garde it truly is, and and then taken to task for not voting the said image a 10.
We all have differing views I guess.

The rubber ducky challenge is STILL my all-time favourite!
At first glance it felt stifling, but I think it was the exact opposite - it really brought out creativity BECAUSE it was so limited.
It is quite easy to come up with something when you have very few (or no) restrictions, but the more limited you are, the more it pushes you.
I would dearly love to see an occasional challenge along the rubber ducky line, it would balance the monthly Free Study. |

that what my thinking was, limit ppl so they have to be creative around the challenge aim not creative with titles or interpretation justifications |

I love specific challenges, Rubber Ducky, Pencil, Woody are just some that come to mind. |

In the name of all that is good and right - please give the members what they want!
Object-based photography is very popular with lots of people.

I agree. Constraints breed creativity. I would enjoy the challenge of devising a scene that is beyond obvious. Not all the time, but once in a while perhaps |

Im all for it. It challenges the mind to come up with something interesting/funny/thought prevoking not just beautiful to look at. It makes you think outside the box. I love those types of challenges. |

Couch potatoes. I can't think of anything more uninteresting than everyone shooting the same thing. The site is trending in ill-advised directions. But, it's okay. I can always choose to not participate and not vote. |

Sure, that kind of specificity would be welcome. But, generally and generically, not so much. |

I sort of like those challenges, personally: "Use exactly two parsnips, one white sock, a wheelbarrow, six anchovies and a hand mirror to compose your picture. Be creative." I wouldn't want to see them every week or anything, but they do kind of force people out of their usual rut, eh?

Actually, I would venture a guess that one would have to be very creative when asked to submit an photo under such restrictive conditions.

Please no. I have for too long tried not to shoehorn my way into challenges, now I'm suffering the severe side effect of stagnation, Ok my scores have been good but have I gained anything as a photographer, don't think so, Let's bring down the walls and shoehorn away and grow as we go, both in our photography and in our imagination. I have come to relize that the photographers that I admire the most on this site are shoehorn specialists :) we have an imagination lets use it, there only has to be a bit of a connexion for us to squeeze that shoe on, doesn't have to be DNMC. It's so easy to become complacent here and once you get the rythm of this place you can so easily get an above 6 score and even get in the TT at will, last year i made a conscience effort to fit in and do well and i even managed a straight run of 26 six's, luckily my much more artistic team mates helped me see the light. We don't need even smaller boxes to improve. |
