I worked for a photog who used Gitzo. After I got a chunk of my hand pinched off in their @!&%# twist-to-lock leg extension lock, I swore I'd never spend money on one. So far, I haven't. |

I have a Gitzo and have pinched my hand from not paying attention when closing it up. I love this tripod and hope it's the last one I ever have to buy, except for perhaps a smaller travel variety. At any rate the lesson is to be aware and pay attention. |

I have Manfrotto 055XB legs and a ballhead, and now that Magnumphotography has upgraded his tripod from necessity (Canon 5D Mark II + 500mm lens + TC = a lot of weight!) I think his whole setup is now Gitzo, legs and gimbel-style head (he gave me his old Jobu gimbel head for my 300mm as it no longer holds up to the weight of the 500).
I love the Manfrotto setup - 2 of the legs now have foam padding on them so your hands don't freeze - but it does have some weight and those legs extend to only 5ft. His new set of legs extends to something crazy like 6'6, he's 6'2 and can walk under his tripod! Could also use it as a very basic teepee too :-) But his setup cost BIG $$$$. Be ready to spend it if you really want it that badly.
ETA: before he went Gitzo he managed just fine with a ballhead and the same set of legs that I now have, only much older.

Yeah, my Manfrotto 055 lasted me almost 10 years. Breaking one leg lock, during that time. Pinching my fingers on the old locks, at least 10 times. Although, Dollar for dollar, I think manfrotto legs are great.
The only reason I stopped using them, was my new 500mm's weight. It just could not give the support I needed. So I upgraded to the Gitzo gt 3541 xl and Wimberly II gimbal head. Huge Difference.
Even If I did not have the 500mm, I could not go back to Aluminum. Carbon is extremely light weight. Yet extremely stiff, with amazing vibration damping qualities. Plus not cold in winter, like metal.
For me, my 3541xl is fantastic. You can shoot super low, or extend it. Then find a chair to stand on! It can go way up! Plus without a centre column. Yeah, my gitzo does it all.
I got mine for $680 during black Friday. $200 off. Still Pricey for sure, but it seems like a great product. So far, I have no regrets.
If you do go carbon. I would go with Gitzo.
Great product!

I have a tiny carbon fiber Gitzo for the backpack and a huge carbon fiber Feisol for a more stable platform. I share the Gitzo ball head to save money. Both are great, I'd give the edge on quality to Gitzo
If you carry it any distance go for the carbon fiber, studio probably save the $$$ |
