If I have Win7-Pro, do I need to download some sort of "XP Compatibility Patch", or is it native in Win7-Pro?

(To install and run some old-fashioned software)

Any help appreciated!

Most software installs and runs just as is.

There is a virtual machine for XP that you can download and run for stubborn software.

But I run everything without problems without it. And you're better off trying first, since running a virtual machine does consume resources.

I run software as old as Ecco Pro 3.0, 32 bit software from the early 90's without any trouble. I have hundreds of applications on my system, and I've never felt the need for the vitual machine.

Hmmm, I figured it would be something like that. Thanks!

It's been awhile since I was in IT, but I am pretty sure you should uninstall Windows 7 and install this:

Don't forget this essential UI. Makes the computer easy-peasy:

Also, if you right click on the icon of the software you wish to run, and select properties, there should be a compatibility section. You can choose which older OS emulate and whether to disable some things that might interfere with older applications.
It's worth a shot, if you are experiencing problems, but it's a bit of a trial and error process.

I've had success with this. It doesn't always work, but it often does. If the installer for an old app fails, it's also worth trying the compatibility mode tricks on that as well.
If you do need to install and use Virtual XP mode, refer to this page.

I have to admit with sadness that I still have Windows 3.1 on floppy disks (no idea why I keep this! is it a museum piece by now?)
