At 15.3 mp and 6 fps, I would certainly consider the D800 in DX mode a more than adequate sports camera. Not a dedicated sports camera, but an amazing landscape camera with a great option for sports as well.

Still, if I were to choose the D800 over the D4, I wonder what I would be sacrificing that is worth the $3000 difference in price. That's the point of my post: what I would be missing, not really that the D4 sales would be killed.

I totally see where you're coming from, but like I said, the same question could have been asked of the D700 vs D3. Hell, they had the same resolution and everything.
Frankly, I'm not terribly up on all the features of the D4 since it's just not even an option for me, but I'd say they're just designed for different market segments. The D4 is intended as a working professionals camera where gear gets beat around and is out in the thick of things- photojournalism and sports, while the D800 is intended more for landscapes/portrait work. I think the separation in features is relatively similar to how the 5DmkII vs 1dmkIV has progressed.

Well, that's why I bought the D700 instead of the D3. I'm thinking that the D800 will be a better choice for me than the D4.

For the type of sports that I mainly shoot, kiteboarding and much slower stand up paddleboarding, 6 fps is plenty and no magazine needs more than 15.3 mp.

As far as 'beating up' the D800: as mentioned in this thread already, that's what insurance is for. Besides, I've put all of my cameras including the D700 through some really rough conditions and I haven't had a problem since many years ago when my D70 fried from a wave splashing it from below.

As long as I am not missing out on anything significant that I'm not aware of, I think that the D800 at a savings of 50% would be a better choice than the D4. I just hope that I really am not missing something important.

To me, low noise is the most important given that quality and sharpness are there. This is one reason I'd move to full frame, for lower noise and higher dynamic range.

This still has me worried about this camera...Nikon's samples are all low ISO...the highest on the D800 (not E) that they show is ISO 640. And honestly, none of the examples they post are all too impressive.

I also have to wonder whether it's worth the $3300 it just cost me. I could buy a Canon 5D Mark II for around $2100 now! That's a pretty big price differential in itself for cameras that don't seem that much different to me (at least for my needs). Other than having to switch all my lenses, what makes Nikon worth that much more than Canon? Even the D700 is in the 2700 range now, so it's not a D800 issue. Not to mention Nikon pro lenses seem to be so much more expensive than even Canon.

During my "waiting period", I'm seriously considering switching back to Canon, cancelling my D800 order and selling off. What a pain that would be. And of course, I'm not sure Canon has a nice travel zoom like the 28-300 that will work with the 5D.

I'll put in my two cents here on the D3 vs. D700 and D800 vs. D4 from my perspective of what I do.

The D3s and D3 have many advantages over the D700 for what I do. ISO noise especially on the D3s, rugged build, I've put my cameras in situations where people look at me and ask are you trying to kill your camera? And I've yet to have an issue related to weather. The AF on the D3 and D3s are much better then the D700 in my real world testing. The D3 also has a voice recording memo function that I use ALL the time.

D800 vs. D4 well to me that is an even wider gap for what I do. No photojournalist wants to deal with 36MP files when they are on deadline, takes way too much time. And you say why not use DX mode? There is a reason I have full frame cameras I don't want to have to use DX format to get file size that I can deal with. The ISO advantage is another. There is a reason they don't reach the same ISO the noise on that many MP is going to ramp up quickly once you reach so high.

I probably won't buy a D4 at least for a while only because seriously the D3s is not hurting anywhere I need right now. I constantly print 20x30 with no issues, and don't print higher. Newsprint and studio stuff is also not going bigger then that for me right now.

Just my thoughts. There are more, and I may add them later.

We ordered 10 of them : ) I can let you know how the camera is when we get them.

I was just thinking how crummy an image will look when it's downsized from 36mp to 800 for challenge entries :)

I have been looking to upgrade my D300 for a while, but now thinking 36mp is probably way more than I'll ever need. Perhaps I should hold off until a D400 is announced :)

But your a Canon girl :) Would be keen to hear your reasoning and or intended use?

I'm betting that, with regard to noise, the D800 will neither be a big advancement nor a step back from current models. I'd hope that they perhaps will make forward progress on things not directly related to pixel density that affect the final image, such as readout noise. We'll see.
The price of the D800 is right where I'd expect it to be. What we don't know just yet is where the street price will settle. The 5D successor will undoubtedly be priced in this range as well. I'm just enjoying the show; there's no reason at all for me to change horses, and I'm so invested in the Canon system I certainly won't switch herds :-)

Ordered mine and can't wait to get it. Nice addition to my D700. Now I have the best of both worlds, at least in my mind.....

Enjoy! Let me know how the D800 resolves tonal gradations on the Tokina AF 12-24mm f/4.0 AT-X Pro DX please! Did you order the D800 or the D800E? :)

Which one did you get? ...they made it even harder this time to decide...

I note today too they have free shipping; last night I paid $26. But I guess I have time to call them on that.

LINK

Above is a link to an in depth discussion about the new camera. Good stuff in there. Been reading it on my phone all morning being that my 8am class was cancelled.

Neil I ordered the D800 (not E). I thought about the E version but decided to not chance the a moire and sample photos looked very close in sharpness. I also though that if the "E" turns out to be that much better I can later have the AA filter changed/removed. It was a difficult decision and I guess I just played it safe.

HarveyG I'll try it with all my lenses when it arrives to see how it resolves with each. Lots of speculation on how 36 MP will work with different glass.

Neil, I was told by B&H that the $26 shipping fee was a mistake and it will ship free.

I wouldn't use that Tokina DX lens on the D800...problem solved. That lens was, by far, my favorite lens until I went to the D700. For a wide angle lens I bought the Nikon AF-S Nikkor 17-35mm f/2.8D IF-ED so that I could take advantage of the full frame of the D700.

Allow me the experiment :) Naturally the FX must be in DX mode and he has the lens anyway. I'd think the Sigma 12-24mm EX DG 4.5-5.6 should do well, as would the Nikkor 14-24mm f/2.8 but it intrigues me how the DC/DX lenses fare on the FX sensors especially the 36Mp now that it's out.
