I've been merrily using CS (PS version8) for several years but recently started using using LR4 (beta) and have a 30 day trial of CS5.5 extended. As PS8 is so old Adobe won't allow me to upgraded to CS5.5 extended and am not paying around £1,000 for it so will revert back to CS after the trial period.
My 'issue' is that I've been importing files using LR4 but CS won't recognise the .DNG files. Any tips/tricks to get CS to open DNG files? I downloaded RAW Converter 2.4 but still no joy.
Confused. |

Well, according to at least one web page, ACR 2.4 should open the DNG files. There's a link further down for a checker to help sleuth out problems.

DaNG isn't quite as strong a word as I've been using (but is funnier).
Txs for the link and yes, according to the checker I have the right mix of ACR & PS, maybe CS5.5 is messing things up somehow :(

"In addition to the Digital Negative Specification, Adobe provides the free Adobe DNG Converter (Windows® | Mac OS), which easily translates raw files from many of today's popular cameras. Software developers and manufacturers can download the complete DNG Specification (PDF, 486k). DNG is supported by Adobe® Photoshop® CS5, CS4, CS3, CS2, and CS, as well as Photoshop Elements 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 4, 3, and all versions of Photoshop Lightroom."

txs Robt, I should say the files that I'm trying to open are already DNG files that were created by LR during import. Before trialling CS5.5 I was able to open them for editing in PS from LR. No longer have that option as LR has linked itself to CS5.5.
Maybe I should just delete CS5.5 extended before the trial expires but am having fun with the repousse tool so want to make the most of it whilst I can. |

Two options, short of uninstalling the CS5.5 trial:
1.) Try opening them directly in Ps CS by right-clicking and selecting "Open With"
2.) Try re-associating the file type with Ps CS. It's a near-certainty that the default application for opening that type of file was changed when you installed the CS 5.5 trial.

Cheers for the continued help but neither method will allow me to select CS (I surf to the CS application but it doesn't open). This is all on my laptop so might leave it till tomorrow and power up the old pc to see if I can sort things out :(

It's possible that there is something about the DNGs that Lr 4 is creating that the older software doesn't like. I wonder if DNGs created by older versions of Lr would cause the same problem?
One avenue might be to post the question in the Adobe forums, perhaps in the forums specific to the Lr 4 Beta.
