ok slight deviation as i do not know what this is and its been annoying me for a month or so, found it in my kitchen from previous owners,
its 5 inches across the top what appears to be a die but im not sure, so either count this as the challenge or just help me out :)

My husband says it's the top of a burner (older gas stove), the part that lets the flame through. |

its not its stainless steel, its some form of press, my intial thoughts were a gnochi press so they are extruded
teh bottom piece mates perfectly with the bottom of the cut out section
the sections with the holes in is domed and so is the piece that interference fits into it

HA! In one of my images, if you viewed the EXIF you would have seen it was geotagged. Google the tag would show you exact what the image was. :)

PGerst-I thought that might be the case. I changed the name of my photo a bit when I loaded it so it wouldn't be too easy.
It looks like it's off a meat grinder...how are you gonna know who's right?

LOL, that is the problem! Unless someone can provide definitive evidence.

Cookie press? A giant one? Pasta would have to be uniform shapes. Meat grinders just have lots of holes. This thing has many different sizes and shapes of extruded material. I'm thinking cookie press because sometimes they use several little shapes that squeeze out and join together into pretty designs...but 5 inches sounds like a high caliber cookie gun! |

The other piece looks like it must be a cover/lid, which makes me think it stays in whatever piece of machinery it came from, which makes me think it's a larger piece of equipment than a cookie gun...a cookie cannon! No? K... |

It kinda does look like an "extrusion die." If so, I can't figure what the outer ring would be for? Gotta admit, I'm stumped.

I think it looks like some kind of die for an industrial size extruder |

Would a can of Sterno work with this to make a camp-stove / food heater? |

Put a loop of strong string through two opposite holes, and it's a hillbilly button spinner toy.
Maybe it was an ash tray, never used.

Well, perhaps this is the most accurate answer we are likely to get, LOL. I even did image-based searches on Google and Tineye to no avail!

Could it be a strainer for a cocktail shaker/tumbler?
The holes are pickle shaped, maybe it is a pickle drainer-strainer LOL.

Looks like a sink drain with a plug that goes underneath. |

Perhaps a funnel for pickling? |

I rulled out ash tray as the bottom piece fits so flush with the underside of the holes there's a tiny clearance so no good at holding ash
The lip on the bottom smaller section seemed to imply that you push down on it so the 'die' would be face down
Well I tried to figure it out lol, |

Maybe it had some ecclesiastical function, like an incense burner in a church. Or something... ;-Þ |
