The pointy parts are indeed bamboo skewers, however, they are not used as such in this.

Here ya'all go... this might be easy, or it might not.

Strawflower.
01/29/2012 11:43:46 AM · #1464
It is a flower, however it is not a bromeliad (though that is a very good guess, a resemblance I hadn't thought about). If you've seen this plant in bloom, (and I'm sure most of you have) you might not immediately recognize the blossom as being the same as the one shown.

Oops, ETA also not a strawflower, nor related as far as I know.

Nope. No one is on the right track yet.

Another hint: this plant is relatively common, but "underappreciated"

Additional hint:
This plant grows in nearly every corner of North America. It grows from the shores of Hudson's Bay to Hawaii, from California to Florida. But it is (almost?) never cultivated.

How about a cactus?

Good guess. Not a cactus, however a physical encounter with this plant might evoke a similar reaction as a physical encounter with a cactus!

is it an artichoke flower?

Nope. Remember, rarely if ever cultivated.

Here's an alternative view:
