i keep all my pictures in a folder with the date itoo them, 1-28-12, 2-17-11, etc. in lightroom however is lists them in numerological order,so 1-28-12 appears before 2-17-11.

is there any way i can have it sort by date the folder was created and not by the folder name?

Lightroom doesn't understand that they are dates, and can't.

The simple solution is to use a different date system...like I do:

2011-01-12
2011-02-24

or

20110112
20110224

if you prefer.

I name all my files too with a date prefix like this.

Ditto Neil. In fact, you can configure Lr's import settings to automatically put them in folders according to date.

+ 1

Folder name changed to date upon import, appending a placeholder which I then manually change to some description

2011-12-27 Desc => 2011-12-27 Trip on the riverbank

I don't rename the images, as the sequential numbering is enough to keep them in order for me.

If you wish to rename all your folders, you could do so with some freeware batch renamer, having it pulling the folder creation date.
The problem is then reassigning manually all the orphan folders in Lightroom.

LR is great, but so frustrating at times. I think they really expect you to tag everything with keywords, and pulling your sets filtering rather than following your own directory structure. Which makes lots of sense but ties you to LR (uhh, now I understand why..)

You could use a metadata filter to just pick a specific date based on capture date

You could use a smart dumb collection and specify a capture date sequence but you will not see all the folders.

FWIW, as far as I know, Lr does use the IPTC data fields for storing keywords, which means that pretty much any application can use them.

That's true, but good support for ITPC is not as widely diffused as I would like, perhaps it will get better over time.
Then, I am a cheapskate and I use a freeware viewer, fastone, for browsing quickly though my endless piles of rubbish :) Commercial software might do a better work of it.
But in general I do find lack of customization options in LR frustrating at times.

What really irritates me about LR and sorting is for some reason it's only available in the Grid mode. In Develop mode, I still have the film strip at the bottom, so why can't I change the sort without going back to grid mode?

I have sent in several suggestions about it, but it's still that way in the LR 4 preview.
