Voting on the window challenge, I saw a couple of shots where the combination of window and view made a very interesting picture. However, I also noticed a lot of shots where people have found a great view, but where the window really distracts from the picture. I'm hesitant to give out comments like "would have been better without the window" without inviting replies like "that's what the challenge was about". Yes, the challenge was about window views, but that doesn't mean the picture doesn't need to be good to start with. Suggestions anyone how to deal with this? |

The answer is in your question.
Why not say "you have found a great view, but the window really distracts from the picture." And maybe add some words of why it distracts, what you would have liked to see, without suggesting to totally avoid the window.

Nicole:
Not to straight forward, but I have a delete button on my email that I use for rude PMs (and I sleep very well after its use.) But, my observation is that most of the PMs I get are looking for clarification. I think that is fair, and try and answer as clearly as I can.
FWIW: as a big comment fan, if it was my photo that the window wasn't helping, I'd appreciate knowing what you think. One note: I bet that a lot of photographers might agree with your thoughts, I had a hard time with the window challenge.
Best
Bill

Thanks for the replies, you encouraged me to just go ahead commenting. The nice thing is that it's easy to be specific once I'm actually writing the comment. And as I've read somewhere here before: commenting IS a great way to learn about photography yourself! |

It's funny, that's exactly what I was thinking on my own submission, "It'd look much better without the window". I agree with you, and I think if you do your best to be polite and clear with your comments ... no one should get upset (although someone always does :) |

What a coincidence, after first suggesting how to go about it, I now have received a comment from you.
It is constructive, it is well formulated, it explains what you like and don't like, and a suggestion for improvement.
Perfect comment, much appreciated. |

Nicole, I concur. I have also received a comment from you which was constructive, completely reasonable, contained a well thought out suggestion for improvement and was friendly and polite. It was very much appreciated, and I see how the picture could have been much improved. Thank you.
I'm new here, but my experience so far has been that most people are very helpful with their comments. I'm trying to learn and I appreciate that people take the time and effort to try to help. I really appreciate it. |

I've had a couple of comments on mine suggesting that cropping most of the window out makes it a better pic - and it does (I've marked them all helpful). I wish I'd had the insight before I submitted!!!! I don't see them as bad comments because it doesn't say anywhere theat the widow has to be the main part of the image - just that it has to be visible to show it was obviously taken through a window. So don't feel bad for saying the window distracts from the photo - it may well do and cropping or taking the shot froma different angle my well have made for a better shot. |
