Aww. c'mon. It's not like there's been some groundswell movement that's gathering force or anything like that. Just a very few people pointing out, rather non-stridently, that they're not entirely convinced this was a great idea. And a bunch MORE people shootin' em down, some rather aggressively. I'd say the balance is pretty safely on the "You may not like change, but suck it up; it ain't going away!" side of the fence. It's pretty obvious that the majority are in favor of this change, so what's the harm if a few people voice reservations?

Well said, Bear! This community is nothing if not passionate. It's its greatest strength, in my opinion.
Langdon's been at the helm for ten years. I'm sure any naive expectation to please everyone all the time was crushed years ago. And he still welcomes feedback. As far as this change goes, I'm not seeing anything unprecedented happening here in terms of opposition. People are being honest and they're speaking up. Good for them.
A site where everything is thanks and praise would cause me to leave before any silly change such as this. |

Thanks for that, bvy -- I was beginning to wonder if I was going crazy :-) It's good to see SOMEONE's taking my point at face value.
And let me be clear on this: personally, I don't CARE about the avatars. If the community wants 'em, then they can have 'em, and if I don't want to see the page cluttered up with 'em, well, then, I can just turn 'em off. I GET that. It's clear to me.
But I am big enough to realize that glad2badad has a point that's not entirely irrational, and that he has an absolute right to express it politely and reasonably without the community piling on and belittling him. Hell, he'd have that right even IF the position is irrational, unless (arguably) he crossed some line and got all hissy about it, eh? Which, of course, he did not do...

So you're admitting that you think it's partially irrational. ;-)

IMHO this is a useful new feature. I took soooo long to learn who was the person behind a name. With the avatars it would be muh easier. Who don't want this feature, can hide the avatars, so I can't see any problem at all. |

This is not all exactly new; there was plenty of commentary when profile pictures were removed from the Forum postings a few years ago. The browser modification people have referred-to was intended to replace an original "feature" of DPC which was removed in one of the previous updates.

Don't be so friggin' rude!!!!!!!!! I do not appreciate being called a "Newfie".
And because you seem to be blind, I already mentioned in a previous post that I HAVE THEM TURNED OFF!!!! But others obviously don't, and first time visitors to the site won't have them turned off and to me it looks amateurish and cheap. |

Holy crap people do you realize Newfie is a derogatory term and as offensive to a lot of us as the other "N" word?
And no I don't drink screech or club baby seals or eat salt fish for breakfast. |

Wow. Who knew that Canadians enslaved people from Newfoundland?
Definitely the same level of offensiveness.

It may not reach the level of offensiveness as the "N" word she's referring too, but it's right up there with "Polack", "Wop", "Spic", "Beaner", and similar derogatory terms for people-other-than-us, and it's no surprise that Karen's offended -- nor, for that matter, that Slippy, our resident master of politically-incorrect, did the offending... And the sad thing is, it's really easy to avoid; just resist the temptation to put people down in public...

I chalked it up to a time-of-the-month thing. But seriously, my apologies to Karen for using the N word, I'm no historian and didn't realize about the previous enslavement of Newfoundlanders.
