I know that when I view the forum threads on my computer I used to see the large avatars and it made things so much easier to work out who was conversing with whom. But whenever I checked the threads on my mobile there were no avatars and I had absolutely no idea who said what. I just couldn't work out who was who. When I would then check the same threads on my computer I would know straight away who was chatting....I just don't have any idea who anyone is just by their name. Even in the DPC Chat room I have awful trouble knowing who is who. It is embarrassing at times....so the computers that I regularly view DPC on are a necessity to me otherwise I just get too confused. I figure that I would not be the only one out there who has this problem, so the visible avatars are a fantastic help. Thanks heaps Langdon.

... And I'm sure glad I'm not such a control freak that I'm worried about who might be seeing my profile pic :-P ...

Very nice.

While I agree that "control freak" was not nice, I do have to also wonder why you're concerned about this at all? I'm afraid that it just doesn't make any sense - of course I feel the same way about people who are over-diligent about any one aspect of security - since it's so easy to just find another chink in the armor.

Hey Cory. It's not anything really about security overall, it just seems strange to have your profile photo all of sudden showing up all over the forums and even comments left on photos.

As for having a profile photo visible on my profile page it kind of makes sense to have one there (you know - "profile" page). When people come to "visit" my profile page I thought it was a polite thing to do to have a profile photo posted. However, having it posted all over DPC just doesn't feel right to me. Call me old-fashioned I guess.

Anyway, I still think it should be an option, and certainly not something that just pops up all of a sudden without fair warning.

Hey, I totally understand about the whole sudden change thing - while it is exciting to just see new stuff pop up, you would expect that those responsible here might have learned a thing or two about change management from the series of incidents in which Google and Facebook have gotten into hot water over implementing new features without warning or opt-in....

My recommendation to Langdon, Drew, and the rest of the crew, is to actually put someone in charge of change management, someone who understands what that actually means, and has experience in effecting large user base changes where buy-in was/is a critical factor in the success of the project/change.

I must just be completely off on another planet and not noticed...since when do profile pics show up in forums??

I always thought it was refreshing that DPC did NOT use any sort of user-generated avatar, it made the p[lace sort of classy.

From what I have seen over the years the "Look at me!" people don't need a photo...

P.S. I don't look like my present avatar :-) which is currently the coat of arms of Owain Glyndwr > Famous Welshman

Sometimes when we want we get but really want

Or, in other words, 'ya can't win 'em all!'

There was a thread on this over at the GetSatisfaction site. There were not a lot of responses. Consensus seemed to be that there needed to be a way to turn the display off... and there is.
For those that don't like it, simply click the checkbox, save your preferences and it will be as it was before. Some of us enjoy the visual link to the users, find it valuable (see Judi's post).

Actually, it is NOT as it was before by updating your preference setting. You just don't see the profile photos in the threads, but yours is still visible to anyone who has left the preference default setting to see them.

I'll repeat what I just posted - YOU CAN TURN THEM OFF in your prefs.

Ken - I like you...but still I have to say - read the above, you can NOT turn it off or set it so that your profile photo is not displayed in forum threads and also with comments left on photos.

It's really not a MAJOR deal and obviously many people like seeing the profile photos all over the place. This conversation has been interesting and true to the DPChallenge spirit. Thanks for that. :-)

As Bear suggested, I'll just have to "post as a profile picture some innocuous graphic of some sort".

Amen to that. I volunteered, but that didn't seem to work too well :-)

Yes, that's true. And that user can turn them off if they wish. It has absolutely no impact on your use of the site. Are you seriously telling me you don't like people seeing your profile pic next to your name on posts you've made in a public forum, and you want to tell them they can't? Well, I guess your response (removing the pic) says yes.
And you wonder why I used the term "control freak?"

ETA: The fact that it's a site feature now is somehow different than when it was an add-on that a large nu8mber of us used to show exactly the same thing? Pardon me, but the whole tempest in a teapot is just a little, well, surreal.

Fritz - I'm quite surprised at your response to a simple request for a user to have an one-click option in their user preferences that doesn't impact YOUR use of this site. Interesting response indeed.

But therein lies the problem. The proposed one-click option in YOUR user preferences IS affecting MY use of the site. That is (arguably) the opposite of every other setting in your preferences.

I don't love that the avatar shows up when you make a comment on a photo. Makes it more personal when it should be objective.

Perhaps this thread is an illustration as to why Langdon has been reluctant to make many new changes in recent history. When it comes right down to it, people hate change. If something this subtle has sparked such a debate, imagine what happens with significant changes. People complain all the time that the site is stagnating, but when a new feature appears, people hop on the bandwagon to start shooting it down.

Just sayin'.

You can't please everyone, but as long as you please the majority you'll stay around. I think it's great to be able to put names with faces. I even updated my avatar for real. ;D

edit to make can can't

Quite well said. I've been watching this post for a while and this is the best thing said so far.

I think this feature will also highlight an issue when NSFW photos are used as profile pics. There are a couple of profiles right now, that would make me not want to view DPC from work or around kids simply for the pic that is being used as a profile pic.
