1? that's outrageous! I gave the picture a 2.

Really? Why? (seriously, I'm curious. A little tipsy too, but still curious)

Well he did get three colors into the smoke so I gave him an extra point.

If you make people comment ifd they leave 1,2 or 3 as a vote, then it seems that "4" will become the new low.

Not much can be gained by forcing comments. Its a lose-lose road to ill feelings and a net-sum loss.

Requiring the loss of anonymity for all votes might cure that, or even if not for a specific challenge- some internal reviews of habitually low or skewed voting practices.

Welcome Gaby! Enjoy the ride. Good to see another Sarf Efriken at DPC.
Besides rehashing what others have said I think voting a 1 simply because you don't like fur is prejudicial. That 1 vote can make a difference from a Blue to getting a Red or Yellow or cracking the 6.999 barrier to 7.
This is foremost a photography site where one is encouraged and pushed to shoot within a short challenge time frame. Judge the images on photographic ability and adherence to the spirit of the challenge topic, not on one's personal crusade.
Having said that I also do not enjoy certain images at all because there are simply too many of them that are poorly executed and I feel I am saturated with them not just here but on the web as a whole. Yet perhaps that image is the photographers first attempt at the genre? However, when one crops up that is technically well done, it deserves my attention and fair vote and even a comment, like wine glass or water drop images :)

creativity also plays a big part on this site. there have been lots of images that didn't quite meet the challenge or were technically sound that scored well becuase the subject was creative.
