A worthy attempt but I disagree. It's a stretch to interpret a portrait as the structure of a face, or a landscape as the structure of the planet. So a portrait or a landscape would probably get a DNMC from me. How about a candid street photo ... tougher choice. How about a macro showing the structure of a sunflower head? How about an astro-photograph of our galaxy showing the structure of the universe. Maybe lets leave some room for voters to interpret the challenge ... and maybe entrants ought to try to meet the spirit of the challenge. Since the challenge includes the word architecture and loosely that implies an architect ... I suggest any structure designed and built by man might meet the spirit of the challenge.

Just remember that approximately 95% of challenge suggestions (and descriptions) are created by site users, not the "administration" ... however, given that "they" have seen fit to include a variety of roughly synonymous terms in the description, I take it as a deliberate signal meant to encourage voters (and submitters) to interpret "meeting the challenge" broadly rather than narrowly.

I'm thinking the voters that are sensitive enough to feel something will be more perceptive to what is emotive. Those who just don't get it......just DON'T GET it. And what's with the baghead critics who are chicken shits and can't stand up to make their DNMC's? Cowards.....I'm thinking.......and quite possibly narrow minded.....and WAIT...... I'm putting myself out there....in PUBLIC>>>>>>>>> dull? negative?????? jealous??????
Being somewhat new to this DPC.....in that I don't participate in many forums, I find hiding behind some sort of paper bag head anonymity HYSTERICAL!!!!! ( and hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm oddly reminiscent of some sort of southern behaviors during the slave days.........no? lololol.) Seems to show ME, anyway that some people are so arrogant that they think they are taken seriously about their petty hidden DNMC opinions. I suppose it gives cover to those who believe in "political correctness" - but that just ain't me.
Whoops....did I just say that out loud..........?????? SHAME on me............ ;-O!!! |

| LoVi, some people are bagheads so folks don't send them nastygrams during voting. It allows them to offer their honest opinions, which a lot of folks seem to appreciate. Remember that ANY comment is feedback. You may not like it, you may not agree with it, but it is viable FEEDBACK. Take it as such. :-) It doesn't encourage others to speak their minds if they get likened to the KKK, and commenter abuse, either by personal message or calling them out in the forums, is perhaps one of the reasons we have so few comments now compared to what we had five or six years ago. |

Nothing chicken about it, as their names will become known to you on rollover. The bags exist so they won't receive PMs in the meantime. Based on evidence put forth they can hardly be blamed. |

Really? You think this? Then wonder why people are 'bagheads'? The following quote is from another thread...

You, and people like you, wonder why they either
a) don't get comments or
b) people 'hide' behind bags
I have had comments from one or two 'bagheads' on my images, not necessarily glowing comments either, and I fully respect their opinions. After all, that's what it is, an opinion. Learn from it. Your stuff isn't perfect, and neither is mine. If you're not completely open and honest about the criticisms you receive, you're not open and honest about your photography.

FWIW, if at least 50% of the commenters make the same basic comment - good or bad - they're probably right. My early stuff bears this out, if I got a plethora of comments mostly technical in nature, saying that my pics were dark, or blurry, or oof...well...that meant I had to learn basic stuff. Like shooting faster esp as I shoot handheld a lot...learning how to expose properly for the scene...like go and get a basic $25 tripod from Wallyworld.
And eh wala mysteriously my images began to improve, and the comments got better. If you feel attacked on an artistic basis, yes, that's a little tougher to deal with until you grow a thicker skin. But so long as you shoot what you like and enter it, be happy with your work and learn to take criticism. |

Which is why I roughly categorize comments into "real flaws" and "personal opinions". I truly enjoy the ocassional conflicting opinions on the same aspect of the shot.
Commenter A: "Nice shot, but composition seems a little cramped. Could use a little more breathing space at the top."
Commenter B: " Composition is perfect"

I love those! I had one entry that received back to back comments of:
Commenter A: "Could use some more contrast"
Commenter B: "Good Contrast"
just cracks me up! |

Don't blame me for making people go under a bag.........my comment provoked some responses.....so I'm thinking...I'm provocative? Besides....it's not like everyone reads these forums....it seems that this is a place where people rant and beg and complain and laud and whatever....and it SHOULD be.
I am honest......I joke A LOT....and I'm surprised about the responses from some of you folks....jumped RIGHT on eh? The KKK thing was supposed to be funny.....besides made you bristle...didn't it? You have to admit aside from the pointy top....most of the bag head comments DO seem negative. Actually I haven't read that many of them...maybe I just have to hand around to read some that are brimming with constructive criticism instead of put downs and shut ups. I wish I never said it.
I get lots of comments........good bad indifferent.......I don't really care...I am capable of taking criticism...and engaging in two sided diatribes!~ we are adults...right? or ARE we......\"not I\".. said the little bird......... doesn't matter what I say now...I couldn't magic dance my way out of the corner you all put me in after I walked there myself.... oh yeah!!!!!!!!!!!!!
snaffles....don't agree with you... if 50% of commenters say the same thing it just means they \"see\" the same way...they are not necessarily \"right\"....as there is no RIGHT or WRONG> 50% of the sheep on the farm next to me run into each other about 100 times a day.....ummmmmmmmmmm what does THAT say???....50% of people get up and go to work and never smile.....50% of critics eat two jars of Tums a day.....50% of 50 is 25............I am VERY happy with my work. My skin is thicker than Georgia O'Keefe's. lolol
pamb....what is your definition of abuse? and hey....\"YOU and people LIKE YOU????\" what's THAT about? Are YOU a baghead? You don't even know me. I suppose it's the old...\"you only get one chance to make a first impression\" bullshit. Oh well. I always seem to stick out my foot....into SOMEONE's mouth. Keeps the heart beating anyway. And I have always removed it as I've only run into about.... hmm 3 people who liked my toes.
And I'm thinking I was COMPLETELY open and honest....to the point of bothering some of you....lolol I'm open and honest about my photography....but some of it wouldn't be \"appropriate\" here on DPC> that's open to interpretation also.
Hey BOHEMKA- I was so nice to you in your Happy New Year pix....I even TRIED to write in french.......and this is what I get.... :-(((((
Melethia - okokok.....I was wrong. I made a mistake. Should have kept it to myself. Didn't realize I would get jumped. I could NOT have stopped ALL those people from 5 or 6 years ago from commenting! LOLOL I'M KeeeeeeeeeeeDDDDDDDDDDING! I wasn't even around then. They probably just burned out from this DPC addiction and realized they needed to make some money. As of 10:41 ish I provoked 5 comments, good, bad or indifferent. Maybe I will reignite a fire!...(or not)......I don't think I have EVER left a negative or condescending comment on any of the pix I have ever remarked about! In fact I have taken the time to bring out the best by providing my energies in positive ways......pointing out the things I like about your and everyone else's photos on this site. I have often voted on everyone's pictures and could find something worthwhile about every photo in the bunch. To say....D>N>M>C.... doesn't mean much to me as far as the energy that baghead put out....it's more like a \"whatever\" throw away fart.......if they would back it up...it would mean something. Every child in a classroom has worth......every injured or crippled or mutilated life form fights until they can't any more. I taught art for many years and the children who were in my classroom were all worthy of a positive comment. I find worth in \"imperfection\"...there is NO SUCH THING as a perfect woman.....a perfect child...or perfect parent. I feel sorrow when I think about the mistakes I make as far as provoking people to sum up I am a bad person. None of you know me. A drop of red ink in a still lake creates a ripple that touches all the water and tints it. Sunlight, on the other hand brings out reflections that might not been seen in a ripple. I wish I would never have said what I did.

Yeah, I get stuff like that too, always good for a smile :-)
And LoVi, I was just relating from my own experiences, and especially my early days here; that's why it said FWIW. I never said it was cast in stone. If you don't agree with it, that's fine. Anyway nowadays I get very very very few oof/blurry/dark comments, so something changed along the way, and for the better.
As for the sheep comments etc....come on. If you were a teacher, you know for a fact that when teachers congregate and discuss students, and there's a persistently disruptive kid in all their classes, well...the gym teacher can always make them run off their energy, and maybe the art teacher will try to channel their energy into Jackson Pollock-esque works. But I'm guessing the math/science/English/writing teachers are tearing their hair out over this kid and thus they'll be in agreement.
Not that I was ever persistently disruptive student...;-)
Finally another FWIW...you usually leave me great comments. I hope your present issue with voting doesn't change it.

Hey Vivian, you clearly have a lot of spunk. And a great eye for photography. Just remember that typing does not convey the tones, shrugs, and innuendos which indicate you are joking. If you choose to use "provocative" humor, you will receive responses in kind, and not just on DPC. Personally, I've never subscribed to provocation as a way to have meaningful interaction with others simply because it instantly puts everyone on the defensive and pretty much guarantees a rant fest.
Also, broad generalizations (i.e. regarding "bagheads") are another way to alienate people. You are making a lot of assumptions, most especially that it is bagheads that are giving you low votes. Quite possibly true, but not necessarily. As others have pointed out, the reason I've gone anonymous is that I did not appreciate getting angry, kneejerk PMs during voting. If a photog still has a question about my comment after roll-over, my name is there for them to see.
Incidentally, and more to the topic, quite an excellent assortment of entries for this (impossible) challenge :-)

@LoVi - Good for you for speaking your mind.
I'm a bag head and choose to do so because making an objective comment sometimes led to PM's I didn't feel we're fair to my comment. I've commented on a number of photos in this challenge and would be happy to engage with any photographer on any comment I wrote - as soon as the challenge is over - when there's some distance and some data and some perspective from collected votes and comments.
I like your profile, btw, and your collected body of work. From what I see and read there, I'd like to see more of your stuff here. You've got talent and a refreshingly irreverent attitude. |

| I've only received two comments so far, one bag head, one not. The tone of both was the same - basically, I like this because X. I appreciated both of them and would have even if they had been more critical. Personally, I think an exchange of comments between voter/commenter and photographer is always inappropriate before the challenge is over. I'm sure this has been suggested many times, but if there was a poll on this, I would vote to have all commenters' identities hidden until after the results had been announced. |

I don't understand why it matters if someone posts a comment as anonymous? Whether you can see their username or not, it doesn't change their opinion
I think comments and scores will likely vary a lot in this challenge. It is completely subjective, each person has the ability to feel totally different things when viewing the image, or feel nothing at all. It'll depend on personality, and things in that persons life that trigger emotions. I found that I felt nothing with quite a few photos, and other people might find a wide range of emotions in the very same images |
