Here is the tide schedule for the weekend.

A popular restaurant near Point Dume is this one:

Paradise Cove

Wish it was week of Feb 4-11, I'll be down there then.

A real hot spot would be Seal Beach.LOL.

Or, if you're in SD area, don't forget the fabulous National City! I spent three years in that area.

Yeah. Explain yourself!!!

I figure I will stick around through sunset if we are going to go to Malibu. Since I'll likely bring my kids, that will make it a late day, thus Sunday is not ideal since it's a school night. . . blah, blah, blah.

For your kids, Malibu Lagoon is alot of fun especially in the morning with tons of birds, surfers, and the pier to enjoy. Zuma beach is very flat and perfect for boogie boarding if they like to do that. At low tide, Leo Carrillo offers the tide pools where your kids will discover tons of starfish, crabs, and all sorts of sea creatures amongst all the rocks. To photograph surfers, Leo Carrillo beach offers amazing backlighting in the water at sunset time. Zero's is at the other end of that beach where lots of surfers go as well. There's a fun restaurant across the street called "Neptune's Net" which they may enjoy. Yummy seafood! The beach at the foot of Point Dume (Westward Beach) as originally suggested is not ideal for kids to swim as the undertow is very strong and boogie boarding is impossible. However, Westward beach is good for hiking, rock climbing, and scuba divers. If they like to climb rocks, then they should bring water shoes which are more safe than sandals or bare feet.

Mae, you're in charge! :)

Seriously, you know the most about that area, it seems!
01/06/2012 05:18:37 PM · #33
No...No...No....!

Trying to be helpful doesn't mean I'm in charge.

I'm just presenting options.

Options are good...right?

You and Johanna get to co-captain this event. Although, Captain Dale has a nice ring to it! ;-)

I don't know if Matt is jumping in or not?

Need a show of hands as to times, amount of time, dinner or no, though I think we can always play it by ear, too.

Dale, any preferred times? Morning, afternoon into evening?

Johanna, you said you can only come after noon, yes? People or sea?

Ben, do you and the girls prefer morning or afternoon, given you do have to travel the furthest (so far)?

Mae, I take it you're up for either morning or afternoon, yes? Can you help out with identifying places to park?

Any other soCal folks interested? Speak up!!
01/06/2012 06:42:10 PM · #35
I can go any time of day. Yes, I know all the best places to get a parking ticket...;-P

Afternoon it is! Where shall we meet? Do we want to meet for lunch first, then go exploring? Plan on dinner, too, for those that want to stay?

I'm pretty clueless when it comes to Malibu, other than the one time I met up with Matthew and Juliet there, and I've driven by a time or two.

So I guess I'll be the only one there, then? It's like pulling teeth from you people!! :-)

We'll meet at Point Dume State Park, but I need some local advice on where to park, even if it's pay parking, and where, specificially in the park we should look to find each other. Meeting time is 2 pm, so we can chat, hang out, shoot the mini-models if Ben brings them. Sun should give us some good light by 3-3:30 or so, yes? Who wants to bet it'll be a cloudless, bluesky day and we'll be the envy of all the other get-togethers?

The weather forecast is predicted at 69 degrees and partly cloudy.

At that time of day, parking will not be ideal. At the top of Point Dume, the parking lot is very small. At the foot of Point Dume (Westward Beach), the parking lot is bigger and an easy place to meet. I doubt that lot will be full at this time of year. Parking is available along the beach as well at no cost, but those spots fill up fast unless you are lucky enough to pull in when someone else pulls out. The winter price for parking is $8.oo ($10.00 in the summer). But the ticket is good for all the beaches should we decide to wander to another beach. From the parking lot, you can walk up the cliff where all the cliff climbers practice on their ropes and along the cliffs which is very pretty. Or, you can go right and walk all the way down Zuma Beach which is very flat and sandy. To the left, you can walk around the point at low tide and see the seals and pelicans. But, expect to do alot of rock climbing which is really fun too.

Here is a map:

Westward Beach

Westward Beach parking is at the end of Westward Beach Road. You will see Bird View Road as well. But, that road goes up (which you can't really see on the map) to the top of the hill. A very small parking lot is at the top of the hill, but you have to go early in the morning to get a spot. You cannot park along that road at all because all the wealthy landowners will have your car TOWED and the area is entirely residential. However, you can park along Westward Beach road.

Mae, you're lovely. Thanks so much! Lower parking lot it is, then. I'll bring a pair of sturdy shoes and if I'm smart, the backpack for the gear instead of the sling bag. Tripod lives in the car so I'll have it if anyone needs it.

69 and partly cloudy sounds just perfect!!

Oh man, I want to go to where your guys are meeting!
Last time I was at that beach must have been about 24 years ago almost to the day. I was an extra in a TV commercial for the Bud Light Triathlon Series. We had to do a simulated triathlon and we needed to do two takes charging into the water. And sure it's SoCal and kinda' warm, but the water isn't that warm in January without a wetsuit! But my triathlete buddies and I had a blast playing movie star for a day- good times :)

Have fun at your GTG guys- go jump in the cold water for me! :P

I thought I recognized your profile pic from a episode of Baywatch...;-P

This location is really a tourist beach, but should offer something for everyone in a group setting. ;-)

Did we settle on a time? Mae, are you bringing your kids?

Ben, alas...you will be stuck with boring me.

Both my kids have Saturday plans...:-(

My oldest daughter will be attending a weekend school camping trip, and my youngest will be hanging out with her Dad.

But, I'm looking forward to meeting your lovely children and I'll try to bring mine the next time around.

Ha!

So, anybody from San Diego coming up?
01/11/2012 11:33:47 AM · #48
Sorry I flaked out. But Mae has certainly picked up the slack. 2 pm then, at Pt. Dume? I'll have my phone so if I don't spot you guys, I can call to locate you. I may or may not stay for dinner, depending on if Mike will be joining us or not. And I won't know until that day.

Hopefully Matt will see this soon. I'll shoot him a PM just in case.

Humph. I am very jealous of you all and not only because of the weather. Anyone want to trade places? :) No? I thought not.

I'm going to have to bail out on this one. My brother and I are going to remove 4 trees on Saturday. I definitely would rather be in Malibu but I've complained for years about these trees messing up my koi ponds and now is my chance to get rid of them.

Have fun!
