After a long period of rumours, Fuji have entered the game with the Fuji X-Pro1
Not quite the same thing, but Canon have come up with a compact with a big sensor - Canon G1X
As I've been looking for an alternative to carrying my 7D around everywhere, I was interested to see what these cameras had to offer. After having a quick glance at specifications and suggested prices, I'm still more interested in Panasonic micro 4/3. Better lens selection too.
I'm really curious to know what others think. |

The Fuji X-Pro 1 looks very nice, though expensive! quick video here > Fuji X-Pro 1
As I only seem to use my Panasonic LX5 these days,I have been seriously considering dumping my 3 slr's and associated lenses, gear and have been looking at the
Panasonic GX-1 as a possible replacement > Panasonic GX-1
Things are getting interesting out there with kit like this !

| I also thought the Panasonic GX1 sounded interesting, though it doesn't seem to be available here yet. Most of the shops in South Africa don't seem to stock Olympus or Panasonic at all, though I did manage to find a Panasonic G3 - two lens kit - which didn't seem too bad. Advantages of G3 - built in viewfinder and swivel screen. But I understand the GX1 is more advanced. Haven't had time to read up enough yet to see whether it is worth the wait, and presumably bigger price. |

The standard Panasonic GX-1 with the 14-42 f3.5>5.6 comes in currently at £565 in the UK. The GX-1 with the powered lens comes in at £765. On top of that the EVF is an additional £130.
The Fuji X-Pro 1 is rumoured to be around $1,700 US Dollars when it hits the streets.

Have you any idea how the price of the Panasonic G3 compares? |

Looks like you might have a LONG wait. The G1X looks to have a good sensor, but 4x zoom isn't much. |

| I'm never quite sure whether to go for more Canon lenses or the smaller camera. But I'm really small and my shoulders get quite sore lugging my 7D around with just one lens. A little Panasonic would allow me to have the lenses I need with me all the time. |

With the cancer taking me for a ride I am not in a position anymore to carry my camera bag with me any longer. I still manage my 7D and 24-105mm f/4, but also not for an extended period of time. I am not ready to give up yet, but I am seriously contemplating getting this toy to carry around in general. |

It's all changing, quickly and very probably terminally for the 'serious' digital cameras. There are several articles by credible authors currently about suggesting that the DSLR is getting close to expiring.
Smaller cameras are getting much better, and bigger (MF digital) cameras are getting cheaper, leaving nowhere for the conventional 35mm FF (or cropped, for that matter) DSLR to go with any purpose.
After having a couple of Canons, Leica, Panasonic (all digital), and a medium format film camera, I have traded down in size to this, which is an astonishing thing for such a small camera; I've seen it described as a 'game-changing' camera.
Far better image quality than my own negligent style can showcase, by the way. Fixed Zuiko 4x zoom (28-112 equiv at F1.8-2.5) is all I need as I don't like anything shorter than 24mm or longer than 150mm anyway.
But the next generation of mirrorless cameras will offer a genuine alternative to the increasingly pointless DSLR burden, even for those who must have multiple lenses to feel that they're in the game.

| I'll be very interested to see the first reviews of the fuj, if the auto-focus seems fine and there are no other issues, i'll probably take the plunge, i much prefer primes anyway. |

I've been wondering how you are. Glad to see you're still using your camera even if not as much as you would like. |

Yeah, there are some exciting camaeras coming out at CES. I'm looking forward to see how the fierce the competition gets. The choices for a quality compact camera are really getting pretty good.

That Fuji looks pretty sexy. I am really excited about the G1-X, I really love my G11 and having one with a bigger sensor would awsome.
Docpiv, good luck and prayers with beating cancer. |

| The more I read the more convinced I am that the Panasonic G3 with 2 lenses is the best value for money I am likely to find. It's not as small as most of the others but I really like the built-in viewfinder and swivel screen. |

The x-pro1 looks interesting, a stepping stone to a leica m9. With the removal of the inbuilt flash and leaf shutter and the cameras significantly increased size from the x100, it's not the street photography + take-anywhere compliment to a dslr that the x100 is though sadly. Still, I wouldn't complain if someone gave me 1 =).
