Howdy...
i was thinking with the increase of expert editing challenges, maybe we could have 2 best of '11s?
anyone?

eta: you would be able to submit in both the challenges, not just one or the other...

Yea! and how about 1024 pixels as a 'best of' surprise?

Two Best Of 2011 challenges? Really?

Well, if it happens then one Expert would be okay...

...however, if there's only one Best Of 2011 challenge (like I think it will be) then I hope it's run under the Advanced editing rule set.

Disagree with the submitting to both. It should be one OR the other. You only get one "best of"! So one expert, one advanced - and you pick which one you want to enter.

Yep, I'd agree with that if there were two "Best Of" challenges - you'd have to pick one of the other.

I agree with this as long as it is indeed TWO different challenges.
I don't think it would be fair to just make one Best of with expert editing. Because the expert editers can whip up something amazing pretty fast whereas a truly amazing advanced editing entry might have taken months to get right (for instance waiting for the sun to sit a certain way in the sky). The two shouldn't have to compete.

What about a best of, and then 'hidden gem", I have so many great pics, from a trip I took, I'm dying to enter them.

if there are two challenges, i think us members should be allowed to enter both.

Considering that the largest % of challenges are advanced and this is a challenge that we all have known is coming, I think there should be one best of challenge, advanced editing.

Let's see 2011 had:
14 Expert Editing challenges
165 Advanced Editing/Basic/Minimal Editing Challenges

The typical description of "Best of ______" is:
Show us the best shot you took last year (that you didn't already submit to a challenge)!

Expert Editing has it's place but not as a representation of a singular photo that is your best. Expert Editing is taking a handful of shots to use to create a work that is pleasing to the eye.

While expert editing is fun and allows more flexibility with creative work it should remain as an 'unique' challenge at DPC. Expert editing is in the realm of 'out of the ordinary' if you look at the number of times it appears using 2011 as an example (14 to 165). With that, I personally do not think it would be good at all to make an expert editing "Best of". 'Best of _____' should remain in the realm of Advanced Editing.

I agree with both of you.

I don't know if anyone would agree but it feels as if there are fewer entries and fewer votes since the frequency of challenges increased a while ago.
If you are going to enter your best photo of the year, I'm sure you are hoping that people are going to take the time look at it and then cast their vote. You would surely be pushing you luck to ask them to do that twice on the biggest challenge of the year?

An idea that was thrown around last year was giving 2 weeks to vote, to allow for more people to vote. I think this is a good idea for what should be a large challenge.

I really, really want to see what the experts can come up with using any of the images they shot during 2011. I'm sure there would be some blow-you-away amazing images. I can't see why people who don't want to be involved in such an excercize don't want it to happen at all.

I don't think anyone much objects if it were an ADDITIONAL challenge; they just don't want to see the traditional Best-of-2011 morphed into expert. And I don't blame 'em.

How about a special challenge, announced 15 January, entries close 15 February, expert editing, time-frame anytime in 2011?

i think people have a point. There needs to be two challenges. One expert. one not. And people need to choose. Not all of us have the talent and/or patients to work on a peice of digital art for that long. Nor do we know how. I am for both but idk about having people being able to submit to both.

i have a shot that i would LOVE to submit. Ok make that a couple shots. But Idk if i really need expert for them.

Point is. the playing ground needs to be equal for all. there are photographers that dont have that much experience and it wouldn't be fare for those to compete against others who have a lot of PS experience. there must be two challenges!

These ones should be two different challenges and we should have the chance to enter both. I like Robert's idea :)

I think Robert has a great idea too. With more time to get the shots/processing done maybe we would also see more people participating in this Expert challenge? It would be great if with this much time the challenge thread filled with advice from those "in the know" on how to as efficiently as possible create composite images, etc. too.

I've been waiting to see if there will be a Best of 2011 Challenge, but if it is expert editing I will probably sit it out. Would prefer to see Advanced editing.
