I have been thinking about purchasing this lens and I just wondered if anyone else has it and whether they are happy with it. I know my profile says that I have the Nikon fisheye but I just borrowed that from a friend for a few shots.
Any thoughts would be appreciated. |

Fred Miller ( Derf) has shown us some terrific stuff from his surprisingly inexpensive Opteka 6.5mm Fisheye...

I have it. It is actually a pretty good fisheye. It's operation is a bit, well, funky but you get used to that. It's a hoot on full frame, and still very "fishy" on an APS-C camera. Stop it down, and get everything from a couple feet to infinity in focus!
The pricing has unfortunately followed the popularity of this lens. When I bought mine in about 2004, I paid a little over $200 USD directly from rugift.com. Pricing there is now $339 USD. If I were considering it today, I don't know if I'd jump at it for that price. But then again, other fisheye options are *much* more expensive.

Ah, yes, forgot about the Opteka. I'm normally going to run very fast away from anything with the Opteka name, but this one seems to be a decent performer. It is quite literally a different fish, though. Despite it's 6.5mm focal length, it is supposed to fully cover the APS-C frame, giving a 180° field of view diagonally. Normally, you'd expect that from a 10 to 11mm fisheye lens (like hte Nikon 10.5mm). The answer probably is that the Opteka uses a projection other than equiangular. Some measurebating would tell the tale.

i bought this one, Rokinon; it's supposed to be the same lens that's manufactured by Samyang, just rebranded by different companies. (the rokinon was the most inexpensive)
i think it's worth the price, it's a fun lens.
