I keep getting these messages saying I have low disk space. I bought a 2T external hard drive and transferred a whole lot of photos and documents to it, but I still keep getting this message seems strange, do you think my computer is getting old, it is about 4 yrs old.
I've also done disk clean ups, and compressed all my files. Does anyone know the solution. |

Buy a new computer. (Just kidding)
I had to force myself to go through and delete the series of shots that were made by holding the shutter (which will now be a bigger problem for me on the 7D) and grab the one I wanted, would clear about 100MB or so per series like that. Take a day set aside to do it with lots of caffeine.

Check out SpaceMonger.
It visually displays how much of your disk is used for what, all the way down to individual files. I've found it very useful in finding old stuff that was taking up a ton of space. |

Look for it in your downloads folder. From your browser menu.

Geeze, Dave, that's kind of irresponsible. Some poor n00b might actually DO this...

You would be surprised how many people actually do this and don't know what they did until it is too late.
Not cool. |

I'm don't know what computer or operating system you have. I had the same problem on my Vista machine. It seems that shadow copies were the culprit and need to be deleted often.
Start> right click Computer> right click Properties> Disk Cleanup> Choose files from all users on this computer> continue> click OK> Delete files in pop up window> ( this will get rid of the temporary files, next step to delete the shadow copies) In the Properties window click Disk cleanup (again)> click Files from all users on this computer> continue> in Disk Cleanup box click More Options at top> under System Restore and Shadow Copies click on Cleanup |

Did you try emptying the recycle bin.
Then click on the drive, click Properties, then click Disk Cleanup

Even though you fixed it, also consider quarantine files your virus software stores. Sometimes, depending on how badly your computer is infected, or how long it has been since you purged the quarantine folder, the number and total size of the files can be quite large. |

This might be a very, very stupid comment...buuuuuuut, when you copied the files over to the external HDD, did you COPY them or did you MOVE them? If you just copied them, then you still obviously have the files on your computer HDD and hence, didn't free any space at all...just created a duplicate on the external.
Incredibly simple, I know, but I've known many a folk to have done this and assumed that copying was moving. |

Hs ha funny you should mention that, but thats what I forgot to do, but i did manage to transfer most documents and photos to the external drive yesterday,(but funnily enough I could not delete some photos) the computer just wouldn't let me. So anyway when I turned the computer on this morning it was faulty, couldn't upload anything thats what happens when I listen to all You 'experts' out there................lol... anyway, I'm on my sons laptop now, my computer has been taken away by the technician...oh well timing is right as we are going away on a little holiday for 4 days on Monday, should be ready for me when I come back.
By the way, photos don't seem to look as good on a laptop, much prefer my desktop, photos are larger, who agrees? How many people vote for photos on a laptop, I think they don't do justice to the photographer.
