my 28-70 2.8 l is broken there is a loose screw in there rattling around, its goneoff to canon they wont look at it as its no longer supported as off august 2011
canon pro centres wont look at it, so can anyone offer advice or a good repair centre in UK or even europe.
might try and open it myself and have a look have the parts pdf with exploded dismantled diagram
this is my favourite lens, one company quoted £130 to look at it, ouch wathcing two on ebay might buy another if reasonable and sell mine for parts on ebay?

Boy, that sucks. Shame on Canon, that lens isn't *that* old that they should completely drop repair support. That's especially true for mechanical repairs. I can understand limited availability of electrical parts, what with obsolescence being such a problem, but mechanical parts are quite another matter.

I'v pulled L glass apart myself a few times mate, its not so bad. There is a good place in Luton UK that could do it for you. |

Can't recommend anyplace in the UK, but my 18-135 had a loose screw rattling inside this past summer, interfering with the zoom & focus mechanisms. Cost about $170 USD to get it fixed by a thrird party, about half what a used one goes for. No doubt the L lens is worth the repair even more.

So update she's fixed :) well chuffed with myself been 6 hours but cooked tea bathed and bedded and stories for my boy,
A loose screw on he zoom guide was in there and some other loose stuff and binding screws cleaned all the crap out of here and she's working smoothly. 85% rebuilt but that's been the slow bit had to go back a few steps a number of times to but bits in I've missed or put in the wrong way
I'll updated in a bit when she's all back together
Fixation wouldn't touch it as they are canon pro centre I spoke to them and spoke to lehmans so been a fun experience and saved my self £200+ I reckon and Lerned an awful lot. Anyone got a 28-70 needs repairing I'm your man lol haha obviously I could put it on camera and it not work now hahaha but I've tried and that feels good hacking an L apart hehe

yeah feeling chuffed, but i guess im well prepared for it. i used to work for sun microsystems in munich as a backline server technician working on enterprise class servers so used to take apart $2-5 million dollar servers there hehe
also worked as a roadie fixing amps and peddles and doing current job driving diggers ive taken engines and hydraulic system apart just follow your nose and you figure it out. some bits take longer than others, the first bit is the hardest popping the covers to find a way in.
can now strip it down to separate parts in 5 mins :) got a 100-300mm canon in a cupboard some where that is stuck focus ring so next project :)
glass of wine now just been out shooting with it for motion blur :) all fine and focussing and smoother than its ever been |

oq;ernfoqr3nefowq hfoqweifjpqw[eoijfqwe[pofij expletives
i did the one thing i know not to do and im really annoyed at myself, i took my 5d mkii to work with me as we had a good frost shot osone lovely landscapes etc and kept my camera on my front seat, when i got to work i put my camera into my back pack and didnt fasten it up as i was rushing.... its a lowepro mini trekker.
i never do this as inevitable the reason i dont do it happened when i got home grabbed my bag and my 5d mkii and 28-70 L went pirouetting throught the sky hit the foot step on my pickup truck and landed on the road......
heart sinks.......
so i know this lens intimately as only a week ago i had it in bits to clean it and it was working the best it ever had it was spotless and smooth any way, 5d mkii is fine, but lens has broken 2 of the mounting lugs, ive glued them and they should hold but im gettign a communication error with the lens, ive re soldered one of the connectors and they all continutiy test now,
so im thinking it might be the ribbon cable from teh aperture control motor which if it is its good night viena,
Untitled by gilesbert, on Flickr
so ive stripped it down to every single part
Untitled by gilesbert, on Flickr
you can see the offending part in the foreground, anyway ill build it back up see if it works if not ill strip it again and sell it on ebay for parts
its covered on my household insurance but i wont be claiming
im watching another one at the mo and will throw £300 at it if it comes at that I'm happy if not ill save up and get a 24-70 newer one
not good with my 5d classic dieing last week that on its way to canon
but its all been put into perspective as just ran into my next door neighbour and good friend and she found a mutual friend of ours dead last night in his house... nothing like that to put the trivial things into perspective
